Similar to Angela's idea....I reach across the dogs' snout, roll the side of the lip onto the point of a tooth, then press the lip against the point of the tooth until the dog lets go. It works pretty good.
I've tried Bob's idea where you reach a finger into the mouth and press down on the back of the tongue near the throat to cause a gag reflex. It works but if you don't have good reflexes a molar will get you. I use the lip roll more lately. LOL
Debbie, you may want to try other toys, or a rolled up kitchen towel. Maybe he just hasn't found a toy that really floats his boat yet. I always had rolled up kitchen towels close at hand and they seemed to do the trick for my pup. I would place a knot in the middle to give her something to really sink her teeth into.
At 9 months, she's pretty much done w/ the mouthing (finally!)
It gets better! Hang in there, and stock up on peroxide and bandaids...
When I was watching the puppy training DVD, I noticed that Leerburg would say "no phooey" and then give a toy and praise immediately if the puppy went for the toy...I think you need to come up with a word...try that...and just stop the play immediately if he doesn't stop.
His mom was a stinker with the biting...and it got much better by 5 months or so, but didn't really stop completely until she was 8 months or so...lol. She has a very high prey drive and needs tons of excercise.
Looking back, I see lots of things I did wrong...i.e. rough play, played tug with her, etc. Just make sure you aren't doing anything to encourage this type of play.

How long did it take for your first alligator to stop biting so much?
I like this question....a lot. Cannot really answer it though, since it depends on the dog and the training and how diligent you are.
I used the lip roll with Jesea and I use redirection with the Ember. Both methods work well.
And as Bob mentioned, give the toy or food before behavior starts and the game stops if the pup is naughty and goes after your hands or whatever......
Until The Tale of the Lioness is told, the Story will Always Glorfy the Hunter
I know it sounds crazy, but I really miss that stage! I love puppies, kinda like children, I miss having toddlers around too. They grow up so fast, so enjoy it while (if!) you can
