My CC's Mastiffs and Bandogge all get 1-2 miles of brisk running a day. They MAINTAIN on 6 cups of high quality kibble and with raw veg, meaty bones, eggs, honey, yogurt and avocado all mixed as a gravy. 4 cups wont cut it if the dog is a full sized C.C. IMO.

Avocado is toxic to dogs.
Avocado
The avocado is very dangerous to all animals – the fruit, leaves, stem, and pit are all considered toxic parts of the plant. The toxic substance in the Avocado is called persin, which is a fatty acid derivative. Although poisonous to both cats and dogs, this plant is particularly deadly to birds. This is also a proven poison to various other types of animals including: goats, sheep, horses, cattle, rabbits and even fish! Ingestion of the avocado plant can lead to cardiovascular problems, and often results in death. This plant is highly toxic, and in animals symptoms can range vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, generalized congestion, fluid accumulation around the heart, and heart failure. The avocado is deadly and should not be fed to any pet under any circumstances.

But this dog is eating 4 lbs of food not 4 cups, my 80 lb gsd ate only about 2.5 lbs at most while on raw and she had a bit of extra weight on her. Rapid weight loss is a sign of some serious problems, for example, thyroid problems, diabeties, kidney disease, cancer etc. It's easy for us to tell a person how to try to put extra weight on the dog, but to me it seems like lack of food is not the cause. The only way to tell if there is a problem is to get the dog to a vet and get bloodwork done and if everything comes back fine then you have a baseline for future bloodwork. It's much better to catch something early than to catch it as it progresses.

I just talked to my ex, he said he feeds her 3-4 pounds of raw and a couple of days a week 8-9 cups of kibble. She eats 2 times a day. She is still growing, so I will tell him to switch to a puppy food. I gave him the recipes for him to make and he says he's going to take her off raw for a week and see if it helps(its a good kibble) I had sent him some all natural de-worming stuff in case she has worms but he hasn't seen anything. He took her in September and when I went to see them at Christmas she was super skinny so she lost about 15lbs in 3-4 months. Is that too fast still? She runs around lots with his friends boxers too. Aurora the dutch shepherd is due for her shots, do you think it would be best for Zoey to wait til she is a normal weight to have her vaccinated too or does it matter?

Why are you wanting to switch to a puppy food? When I fed kibble I put all my pups on adult kibble at 5 months. There is no reason for them to be on puppy food after that IMHO.
I think a vet check should be first and foremost. Just my two cents.

Someone suggested puppy food b/c it is higher calorie. I am going down on the 15th so she will be seeing the vet in about a week.

Never vaccinate a dog if they are sick or possibly sick their immune system will go haywire. Personally, my dog's weight might fluctuate between 5 lbs at most during the course of the year and she is roughly 80 lbs.
PS - When she was on raw she ate about 3 lbs a day and now back on kibble she eats 3 heaping cups a day. She usually gets 1.5-2 hours of hiking/swimming/walking a day.

My late Great Dane was always very, very skinny. After a vet tested her we found she had IBD (Irritable Bowel Disorder) and problems absorbing protein from the food she ate. We had to work hard to find the right combination of raw foods to give her to keep the weight on, but she never quite looked as sleek as other dogs.
First step--definitely see a vet. There are myriad problems (worms, IBD, heart problems) that can cause weight loss. Then you'll know what to do and where to go from there.
Oh, and by the way. I fed my Dane lots of satin balls and she did wonderfully on them. But of course a vet visit is first priority.

Thanks Cindy.. See why I listen to you and stave off the MEl purchase? I would kill it. Thats interesting since I have just been doing this since I overheard a "trainer" at the local Pet-smart giving food advice over in the corner during a lesson. I thought to myself and figured that I would use it when the Flax oil runs low in the house. Flax oil? Anything you want to tell me about that one before I kill a dog here.
