Jerry, just to add to the "crowd" we have been feeding our dogs according to the Leerburg Menu that Connie linked since Jan 2005. Our "problems" as of then have gotten WAY better, and we're quite happy with how our young dogs are doing.
The pictures do tell a good story - and I would recommend following the Leerburg menu.
Best wishes,

Jerry,
I switched my dogs over to a raw food diet about 2 yrs ago. Best decision I ever made. It really helped with some allergies issues. We also made the switch "cold-turkey" but had some diarhhea. I almost gave up and went back to kibble; however, we finally got on tractk. I have found that pork is hard on my guys. Too much fat maybe and the bones are pretty dense. You need to pick one meat source (I started with chicken) for at least 2 wks before making any switch to another source. Some dogs tolerate pork neck bones well; others do not and this is something you may have to discover. Try to observe the dog to see if he is having difficulty passing the bone. Some dogs will throw up bone fragments that aren't able to be digested also. As a side note, occasionaly check your dog's mouth to look for any lodged bone fragments. I found one just the other day in the roof of my five month old pup's mouth lodged against a tooth. Good luck with the switch.

In what way?
I ask particularly about Wellness because of their Core foods that came out last year (no grain, 95% meat) and that made it onto the WDJ's best commercial foods list this year. (They recommend raw, but they also do their well-known annual "best foods" lists of kibble, canned, and dehydrated.)
I don't have it in front of me, so I'm hoping that you can tell me what the problem ingredients are. This would make a big hole in the recommendations I make for folks who want to do canned.

I will get in contact with the folks I used to work with for specifics. ... As for the "hole" you mentioned, I would suggest anything in the EVO line of Innova. They were the original 95% + meat company, and they are one of the only companies left (with california natural, their sister company) who still bake rather than extrude.
sorry this was so long, I tried to par it down, but I think my experience with the company was necessary to paint the picture...
Yes, of course Evo is on my short list too.
Although I was referring to canned, I still want to know about any Wellness problem. I didn't even know that the company had been sold again (after the original one was sold in the 60s).

And in fact, any time *anyone* has new information about a premium food (such as the LB list), I would always appreciate a heads-up. I try to keep up with ingredients lists, ingredients provenance, etc., of all the low- and mo-grain foods.

Natural Life (don't know if it's on your list or not) has also sold it's company as well. I don't know who bought it, though
I sent an email to a friend of mine who bought the store when I moved across country. The original guy who taught me the most (and I still talk to whenever I get stumped) still works there, and still takes trips to plants before bringing the product into the store (still gets asked to leave by some of them when they don't like the questions)
He should get back to me in a day or so, I will try to find out who bought Wellness.

I don't know if you have heard about Ann Martin's book, "Food Pets' Die For" or not, but there were quite a few pet food companies that were marketing themselves as "all natural" that stopped interviews, refused to answer, etc when asked specifics about the ingredient list and how specific it really was.
Wellness? I read that book, but did not read mention of Wellness.
Yes, I've been following that Royal Canin class action suit. (Royal Canin is not a food on the LB list.)
