Butch, I've only taught tracking to one dog, and we put turns in right away, but that wasn't a pup. Fanni will look like a whole new pup when you get back. I'd gladly keep her training going for you , but I'd probably have to arm wrestle Mike for her . That first trip back on the rig is going to be a long one for you .

YEP!! It sure will be. Having to leave the pup(wife too)bad enough. Having to go and see what the storm damaged might be worse, afraid alot of hours will the order of the day.
Everyone keeps telling me to slowdown. I haven't started doing much with her. A few commands, Here,Souch/search,kennel,sit, working a short track.
I read on another post that you should start teaching the jumps at her present age. I don't know about that, I hate for her to do any jumping at all. She does enough to get my attention(have been not paying her attention when she jumps)
Olde, she loves to bite and retreive, doesn't return ball often but sometimes after she gets tired running around with it. She'll learn.
The other two dogs doing better with her. The GSD makes me take him outside to check on her. The Akita, well the jury's still out on how she is adapting.

I disagree with Mike. I start turns on day one. Like SchH said make the track longer and use the wind to your advantage.
I don't think pups get confused with turns. If you let 'em track straight for a month, then there is a turn. . .I think that is more confusing. You have so far conditioned the dog that tracks always go in a line.

You have so far conditioned the dog that tracks always go in a line. Exactly. At this point, remember that the pup ISN'T tracking your footprint or your scent - she's still purely looking for the food drops, and she's only slowly going to notice that the footprint scent just happens to coincide with these tasty treats. Since you're putting food in every print, building a habit of checking left, right, left, right, she wouldn't care if the track went in convoluted serpentines. She'd still find it. Limiting her early experience to straight tracks leads to the dog realizing that she doesn't need to focus or use her nose much at all - just walk (or rush!) straight ahead and you can't miss it. Then when you do introduce corners, the dog truly will be surprised and confused.

I was told the same thing by my tracking instructor, introduce turns early on. If they get used to tracking straig it makes corner harder to learn for the dog. We introduced corners the first week and had no problems.

now see, there are some other methods popping up already...LOL
we've never had a problem with training corners (all are dogs are extremely focused on the track). Once they get the idea that tracking means nose down, and can do it proficiently, then we introduce corners, curves, figure 8s, etc.
One thing to keep in mind here guys, Butch JUST got the pup, and he's JUST starting training. I don't know if yall introduce corners before the dog understands the commands, but that's how it sounds to me.

Ya, I guess I do. But does it matter? Nope. . .
Plenty of variety out there of begining tracking methods.
Just at the same time the dog is learning that Such means put nose down and look for food, does it really matter where that food is, or what kind of pattern it is in?
I'm not trying to change your mind, just offering another way to go. (Albeit a much better way, but if you wanna putz around with your way it is OK with me. LOL)
