Sandy,
That would be a great idea! It wouldn't have to be a very wide area - just long and narrow - maybe several long & narrow areas fenced in separately. I know that an all-out run is something every dog loves! The area in our backyard where our two dogs run and play together is probably 80 feet long - they can run so fast in that area that it looks like their feet don't touch the ground!

I wish there were fenced in areas that were rented out for dogs to use, ONE at a time, so dogs could run and get some good exercise without having to be on a long line or in danger of getting into a dog fight. I would gladly pay for such a place. It could be set up for 15 minute increments. I'm thinking $5 for 15 minutes. I wouldn't want to pay more than that. If the city ran it, it might be a good source of revenue. Privately owned would be better.
What a cool idea, Sandy! I'd love to rent a space like that that had agility equipment included... Luckily, I like to jog with Oscar for exercise, but he does like to do his own thing regularly (off leash), plus, little agility games and training would be something new for us that I just don't have the space or equipment for in our apartment. If you can rent batting cages and golf courses, why not areas for dog play??

Natalya, we could start a business . Seriously, I do think it's a good idea. All dogs would be safe and the money made could go toward paying for the land. Might even make more than the monthly land payment. Maybe enough to pay someone minimum wage for manning the booth. If not, I'd man the booth and take my dog in for exercise when no one shows up.

I think you guys are on to something there! Responsible dog parks.
There is a large, nice fully fenced area used by the humane society here in town. They use it for training rescue dogs. I walk past it frequently at various times and never see anyone there. I inquired about it a while back for possibly using it for SchH training. The director there recommended I make a formal proposal to the city for having that area be used for citizens.
So...thanks to you guys, I'm going to change the proposal (schH trains elsewhere anyway) to something like a "check out property" where you can go into the humane society and sign up, pay a lil fee and sign up for times to use that land! Will update later (when it's approved and I have a dog I can go use it with!!! )

I've been looking around the neighborhood to see if anyone near by has an extra large yard. I was going to ask them if I could pay them to let Ginger run...

Hey, I think it is a great idea to have a controlled access dog park.
But you know what is better? Just doing stuff with your dog!! Who would've thought of that? Go for hikes, join a Shutzhund or French Ring club. Do a dog sport like Flyball or Agility, go tracking. Buy a springer and take your dog biking. For those of us that have snow how about skijoring! Try Dock dogs, go to the lake and have the dog retrieve a ball. Find a herding instructor with some sheep. The list is endless!
I still think that a controlled access dog park would fill a niche. I'd just be to busy to go play there as I'm already playing somewhere else with my dog.

I *totally* agree with doing every and all other things, however, a controlled access is something that could really be helpful for training and exercise purposes.
I was even brainstorming the notion of "doubling up" with another dog during scheduled times. Great distraction training. Work solo with off leash training, exercise, etc, and then when the other dog shows up, continue work/training with leash (ie: long downs, etc much like club over lapping in ob, etc).
The place I'm thinking about is also great because there is a path close by (heavily used) with people walking, biking, and dogs...distraction, but fenced area for safety in training! I'm really into this and think it's just a sad waste that no one has been using the area outside the intermittant times the humane society is using it...

I hear you Michele, I'm spoiled with the backyard I have, 75'x85'. I had my friend Joe over tonight with his Giant Schnauzer. We worked OB plus a little agility and then once the dogs were good and tired mentally we let the dogs do the chase thing through the backyard. So they got tired physically! My Mal and his GS have been working together for a few months and are cool with each other, so we thought it would be fun to see them run like maniacs.
Funny as all heck watching the Giant try to keep up with my Malinois. She'd slow down to let the GS catch up and then she'd hit the boost and the GS would whine at a full out gallop .. it was a mournful sound!! Ha-ha! We were laughing like little kids watching them. The dogs will sleep well tonight!

Geoff, I agree with you of course about doing stuff with your dog. We walk together, do PPD training once a week, drive to lakes sometimes (they're rather far away from where I live in the desert), go to public parks on leash. Even the vacations I've taken have been as much for him as for me. I've even thought about the springer and buying a bike, but not with my dog, can't do that yet. Too many loose dogs in my neighborhood and chances of him pulling the bike down are extremely good.
The idea I had with the controlled access dog park (thanks for putting a word to it!) was for letting him have that full out run he needs, and often. The agility equipment in the area would be for pure fun and mental stimulation as well as physical. Now there is where I would be able to trot him around on a springer attached to a bike.

This is a example of what the dog and I do on any given week.
Every weekday AM we walk the kids to school.
Monday we have a private Obedience class. Usually working on CKC/AKC style OB or daily living OB.
Tuesday we have Sheep herding in the afternoon
Wednesday and Friday during the day we go scootering in the park on the fire trials.
Thursday meet up with some other dog friends and practice French Ring OB.
Friday, Saturday and sometimes Sunday as well is our official French Ring club practices.
As you can see we have our hands full. No wonder I'm so tired all the time!
