Save some of those salmon steaks. I've found that whatever the first food is that a dog gets in a new home is often their favorite so for Ivan salmon will likely be a very high value treat. This also works for cats too. We adopted a calico kitty around Thanksgiving seven years ago and she's now crazy for turkey, chicken or any type of poultry. Another cat I used cheese to tame and she'll do anything for a little cheddar cheese.
For Molly it's corn. She spent several days in the shed before I found her and we store shelled corn there for our corn stove. She tore a corn sack open and was eating that just before I discovered her. Took almost a week for all of it to pass but now she loves anything made from corn.
