Actually, dogs *never* carry their puppies by the scruff of their necks. Cats do. But a bitch picking up her pups will always grab them around the body, or if she's nervous and afraid of hurting them, by a leg, but the scruff-hold is something I've never seen a dog do.
Same goes for the scruff-shake. Just about the most severe discipline I've seen a bitch impose is the snap, which'll send puppies shrieking as if they've been hurt and while there are individual differences, as a whole bitches are very tolerant of their puppies' shenenigans.
Where I *have* seen a dog grab another by the scruff is in a serious nasty dog fight and that was because it was convenient (for the biter, not the bitee).
no i don't carry her by the scruff..i will give her a shake with it though...and if she is carrying on when i pick her up i will keep hold of it..
anyway, thanks guys for your insight...very helpful...just wanted to make sure i had a normal puppy here and not a bag of nerves.......
