Thank you ladies. I feel better about re-suggesting this to my sister.
And I agree with you Connie, aside from planting an unwanted litter, containment problems can and will result in death. Eventually.
We are working on that as well. I have personally gone to help her fix her fence and outdoor kennel and I have no clue how he does it. His nickname is Houndini. A plastic crate is the only thing that keeps him in, but she works and goes to school so somedays, it's pushing 7 hours that she's gone.

Or....get him a vasectomy!
LOL-Natalya, great minds think alike!
Ahh, my inspiration has arrived!
*between you and me, I only wish I had been "inspired" {and better educated, and more confidant} before I made the decision to neuter Oscar... live and learn.
**this does not change my initial post and suggestion for said puppy.

Just read the other posts. Thanks ladies!
Jenni, he is more the normal type of PB. Not the hideous monster PB - that's why he gets over the 6 foot fence I also think he is about done growing.
I think we'll get him neutered. I don't think my sister can afford a vasectomy, but I'll tell her anyways.

I have 2 escape artists, one trained by the other. I got commercial kennels (one used on ebay for $250!Yay!) and put a top panel on it. No way they're getting out of those. 8 gauge welded wire is my friend. Oh, and padlocks.
Edit-Alex, Simon was just one at the end of June/beginning of July. He is filled out, completely, I'm guessing. He is 57lbs of solid, rib-showing muscle, although he appears to be about 40lbs, lol. I think your sis's dog is not going to be affected (growth-wise) by a lopping.
Natalya- Have you ever found a vet who does it? I never have, but I haven't looked all that hard, either.

We also have an escape artist, He is like a mouse..if his nose can fit he somehow can too.
We supervise him at all times in the yard, but we have also installed an invisible fence about 1 foot inside the actual fence and so far it seems to be working to keep him away from the fence and gate.
I would never rely on it for total containment, but that along with the real fence seems to be working.

Nah, mostly because I wasn't even thinking about it until after it was too late. You can bet I'll look into it in the future though - I just can't believe it would be all that hard, or any more expensive than a regular neuter (Oscar's was over $300!)... then again, how often does reason usually factor into these things.
The easiest thing to do would really be to avoid singing a spay/neuter contract in the first place... I repeat - live and learn...

I had my pup neutered at 12 months. I did not note any personality change, and he hasn't gotten any taller or gained any weight (he's now 15 months).
I would definitely recommend getting your sister's dog neutered. Unwanted pit mix litters usually end up... well, I'll let you fill in the blank.
I did look into vasectomies for my dog and was unable to find any vet within 60 miles who would do it. No vet had ever done one, it seems, and I didn't really want to use my pup as a guinea pig - not that they offered anyway.

Sorry to complicate this thread with unusual surgical procedure talk - simply speaking, I agree with the above!!

Angela, did you find one at all? You said "within 60 miles". If I could find one, I'd be interested in maybe getting it for Simon. I don't care if it's in Canada or Mexico. I will never neuter another dog for anything less than a serious medical condition. Let me know what you found, please. I've had no luck.

May I ask, why is that?
