That wasn't the exact article we (training club) used for the dog who had been taken in and the people were lying about having him, but those are all the steps.
Number 1 is don't waste time, I'd say. We didn't want the dog to be sold to an out-of-area buyer (turned out that wasn't the case, but it often is).
We did everything on that list. It was on the third search day, on the 2nd go-through of the block where the dog was that we finally started asking kids.
We had just left a house where they said they hadn't seen him, and then we asked two kids on their bikes right nearby, and they said "He's in that house" and pointed to the house we had just gone to.
One person stood on the sidewalk with her cell phone ready to call the police and watching the second person who went to the door again and said "Are you sure you haven't seen our dog and maybe didn't recognize him, because we know you adopted a dog recently and may not know that he's ours." We absolutely did not want any kind of angry confrontation or anything to create danger for the dog.
The guy mumbled and beat around the bush, and then he said "Oh, THAT dog" (basically).
His kids wanted to keep the dog and he had lied.
Anyway, point was to get out there door to door (NOT ALONE) and to ask kids.
Remember that whoever has him has to take the dog out to potty, and some neighbor is going to notice.

Mallory, didn't you take Capone from the irresponsible people that had Brook and Sonny? Any possibility they have taken him back? Did/do you know personal info on them or did the AC/shelter have a case against them for cruelty?
Posters. Talking to kids. All great ideas. One thing also is don't limit your search to your immediate neighborhood. Someone willing to steal him in broad daylight, even if they live in your area, may take him out of the area because they know you will be looking for him.
I know what you are going through. Cajun is still gone and has not been seen since the sighting in January. Put up pictures EVERYWHERE, go to local popular grocery stores and show pictures to the employees if you can't post pics(show them the pics even if you can put a poster up) Pet stores, feed stores, minute markets etc.
Make sure that police report stays updated, call them often. Do you have a local ASPCA? Keep the cup cable and his tags and have any and all vet or formal documents ready in case he is found. Contact your vet or any animal "professiona" that has seen you together and knows he is your dog and let them know he is missing.

yes, and after they got evicted and moved, i moved, then found out that the guy was taken to prison back in jan, and the girlfriend was living with her mom, who lived 1 block away.....
they saw me in the area a bit, then the mom left, and her kids are staying with the grandmother.
an officer has their info. He talked to the kids, and asked if their mom had a new dog, they said no, but then too, they might not have seen her that day.

I'm kinda confused on which story to believe this one you posted on
** Mod Delete **
The result was the same. There doesn't seem to be any point in distracting from what happened by pointing out details that don't agree about how it happened from one board to another.

I forgot to say that you have to go to or send someone to the shelters. You cannot rely on the system of transferring info from intake to the receptionist.
I would also go again in a day or two because of the lag between picking up and animal (or having one surrendered) and having the animal listed in their paperwork and/or up on their website.
Because of the breed, I would cover the shelters like white on rice, starting with the nearest and moving outward in a circle. You don't want to let days go by without claiming him.
And when you have the neighborhood plastered with posters, whoever took him is probably going to get nervous and surrender him.

yeah, i went there today, the shelter itself is closed, but for a few hours, an adoption fair is hosted in their building, so i was able to get in, and the rescue people called in an officer.
i posted a lost pet ad on the AC website.

I am sorry about Capone. I hope he finds his way back to you somehow. I'm sure people are targeting him because he looks like a pit bull or whatever.
I hope that your dog has a microchip and I'm sure it will be so nice if he has a GPS too. I'm sure it will be easy to track him down.

Mallory, make sure you talk to postmen. Go to the post office early tomorrow and take pictures. They cover your entire town/area, and if he is loose in a backyard or tied up or walking, a postman/mailman may see him.
Just a thought.
I'd also talk to UPS and other package deliveries.
