You might want to consider slowly phasing in a different verbal correction other than "No". As your child gets older, you'll find yourself saying "No" an awful lot, and some dogs may be confused when they hear you yelling "NO!!!" as the toddler goes to pull a table over, put a fistfull of dirt in his mouth, or one of the many other toddler antics...
The poor dog might find himself wondering, "What did I do? I was just sitting here, and Mom yelled NO at me."
This may not hold true for all dogs, but it has for mine.
Cindy: I know what you mean about the 'velcro' dogs. My sister in law's dog *used* to be OB trained, but it fell apart because they never practiced after the petsmart graduation. :rolls eyes:
Now he'll put both front paws on your lap & get right in your face. You tell him down, and even push him, but he stays firmly planted. VERY frustrating, as he's a bright dog, but has no direction given.
Alyssa: Good point! I made the mistake of using 'no' and 'go' with Sasha for 2 different issues. 'no' she'll stop what she's doing and look at me. 'go' generally means, 'go away' or move from what you're doing and go somewhere (anywhere) else. Fortunately, it seems to work somehow! Though I'm planning on phasing out the 'go' command to an actual 'place' command.
She's pretty good with 'drop it'. She'll spit out whatever she has, and if you hold out your hand, she'll usually put it there.
