Thanks Natalya and Cindy (and all others),
I called around and finally found 1/2 fryer chickens. I'm going to pick some up today. I will keep you posted (pun intended). BTW, Cleo passed that oxtail bone. YEAH!!! No more oxtail for her (although Alex, our older rottie, chews them up and loves them).
My difficulty lies in being in Hawaii. We don't produce any local meat. So all of our meat is pre-butchered and shipped from the mainland. I can't even find chicken necks or backs at the supermarkets or meat wholesalers!
Natalya, you mentioned tripe as a raw superfood. Is that true for white and green tripe or just green? I saw white tripe in a supermarket here. If so, is that like an organ meat to be feed sparingly or can it be more of a muscle meat like heart?
Also, are there any other raw "superfoods" I should be looking for?
Thanks again,
eric

Just green. White tripe has been cleaned/scalded. It basically worthless for your dog.
Tripe can be fed however you like it. Add it into the repertoire just like you would any other food, slowly. Once you know that your dog is tolerating it, feed it as often or as much as you like.
I bet it is tough to find variety there.
What about fish?

thanks Michael,
Fish we have plenty of here. Are fish bones ok for a puppy? If so, are there any fish to avoid? Even though this is Hawaii, fresh fish like ahi, ono, opakapaka and mahimahi is rather expensive. Frozen talapia fillets are relatively inexpensive at the supermarket (just about everything in Hawaii is expensive--even mangoes) and i can get bait fish really cheap. Do you feed the whole fish, guts and all, or just fillets? I have a few cans of sardines in water only can I give her those? Sorry for the knucklehead questions, but I just don't know what's ok to give her.
Thanks again,
eric

Fish bones are fine, too. Dogs handle them just as easy as other animal's bones.
I'm not familiar with any of the native fish that would be available to you. You might check with local game and fish about any problems with your native fish. Also, I don't see any problem going with the cheaper bait fish. As long as they follow along with other advice given in this thread and are big enough they can't be swallowed whole.
Feed the whole fish. The only thing I do, keep in mind this is strictly a personal thing and not something you HAVE to do, is cut off any really pointy spines or fins. This is strictly a comfort thing for me, and is not the gospel of feeding your dog raw fish.
Sardines in water are fine, too. So long as they are part of the menu and not a majority of it.
http://www.dog-health-guide.org/salmonpoisoningindogs.html These are the only fish you would need to steer clear of as far as I know. Not a big deal, just don't feed these.
These questions aren't knucklehead at all. All valid questions, IMO.

Thanks Michael,
Great advice! I'm sure I can find lots of fish for Cleo here. Thanks for the link, also. Lots of great info there. As much as I love Cleo, Salmon is way too expensive here to feed to her.

http://www.rawfeddogs.net/
This is a fun site for rawfeeding. Check out the recipes.
These should give you a good idea about what is O.K. to feed to your dog. Basically if it is raw meat, bones, or organs then it is O.K.
It helped me to see the pictures of the dogs eating different things.

Hey Mike,
Love the recipes....hilarious!
Thanks to all for the feeding suggestions; it really helps. Today I bought a whole chicken and had the market cut it into quarters. You all are right! Cleo actually chewed her food. Amazing! I still get a little freaked out after she chews the wings off and then takes two chomps and swallows the whole rib cage but she seems great.
Thanks again and I'm sure I'll be asking more novice questions soon enough. Hopefully, someday I'll be able to answer a question or two.
Aloha
Eric
