No, not a recreational bone, his food. He was on ground food initially, but we've changed him to whole foods, and its seriously amped the aggression issue...probably because the ground was a 20 second slurp, but the bone takes longer to eat. He hasn't had his rabies yet, so its not a vacc issue.
He's still hand shy, and nothing else has changed, other than the aggression. He does seem to recognize hubby and I as pack leaders as he follows us around outside, etc, waits at doors, all that sort of thing...its the aggression that makes me wonder if he's suitable for our family.

Oh, I remember this dog now. Sorry.
What was he like on the ground food?

P.S. Food aggression can be worked with. Are there other big issues? I ask because you seem to be feeling hopeless.

The snapping and lunging at someone going by. Completely unprovoked, no rhyme or reason for it. And again, he still ducks and cowers whenever someone attempts to pet him

Well, then I'd have to guess fear aggression and food aggression- barring a good vet checkup.

He had a vet check up a few wks before we got him...was fine.
Long story short, he was misrepresented to us in certain ways that if I had known the whole story, I wouldn't have gotten him. I had initially been told that the person I knew and was getting him from had bought him from his breeder directly. She had been considering getting into breeding, and changed her mind, which is why she was selling him. Turns out that he had been purchased from yet someone else who had gotten him from the breeder. Why he was being sold to start with, I don't know, but I'm guessing that it likely had to do with the temperment issues I'm seeing now.
*sigh*

Maybe. And maybe all kinds of things when there is a mysterious breeder who the end purchaser never meets.
So I would probably make a decision immediately. If I wanted to work with the dog (who certainly has no fault here), I'd probably let go of all that, since I imagine that no contract exists... ?
And I'd work on the fear and food aggression.
If you don't want to do that work, then you have to address returning (maybe not possible) or rehoming the dog.
P.S. I want to add one maybe-important factor: With a flat-face dog like this, no matter what the aggression issues are, there's really not likely to be any huge E.R.-type damage on the horizon for the handler who wades in here and works with him. It's pretty easy to remain calm and authoritative when faced with a set of Pug teeth. JMO.

Its not me I'm concerned with...its my 22 mth old. Even with a pug, her face is in good range.
I honestly don't know. I'm pretty much dazed right now, and trying to sort out what to do, how to do it.
