Just my 2c worth, having had this experience myself in a way: I used a Dogtra 200NC (from Leerburg, of course!) and I've just ordered a second one, it was so successful in teaching my 14-month old GSD not to chase our 3 cats. He *likes* cats, very gentle and social with them, but when they dashed, it was just too much for his instincts. The dogtra did a great job, over a period of a few months, of convincing him that cats just weren't listed as prey anymore. It doesn't take a hard zap very often, just a few times, then "reminder" lighter stimulations after that. He needs a refresher once in a while, but less and less often, and we can safely leave him with the cats for extended periods now.
Yes, I’m talking about an Electronics Training Collar. I’m a big fan of the Dogtras but I also like the TriTronics line.
My favorite is the Dogtra 1200NCP, but if all you’re going to use it for is this purpose, it’s overkill. If you’re interested in using the tool for more than this, for more just this training I mean, then it’s a good choice.
If all you’re going to do is crittering, then the 200 will get that done and for less money.
Michael I’d suggest that you take a look at the protocol that I suggested earlier. It’s NOT just a matter of zapping the dog when he starts the chase. While that’s worked for you, it can cause all sorts of problems.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
