It would be better to find the feet un-split. Most of the time in the store you'll see them cut down the middle. Takes some of the fun out of it.
Well, we can't have that! Random parts hanging out of my dog's mouth are the high point of my day.
Thanks for answering my question, Mike.

If they swallow a big chunk and then try to regurgitate, but instead start staggering around do doggie heimlich. Occasionally one of mine will do that when eating smaller pieces of meat.
I just did doggie heimlich tonight. It's nerve wracking for me but the dogs don't seem to mind.

Hi,
I fed the pig ears today. The 75 lb. Lab ate it in around 3 minutes. The Malamute barked at it, thru it up in the air a couple of times then took about 10 minutes to eat it. They were flat, unsmoked and pretty large. The veins and hair on the ears was pretty disgusting. GSD ate it in around a couple of minutes. I got 7 ears for $3.00.
My puppy had bad diarreah last night. It exploded all over my brand new living room carpet. Poor thing was trying to let me know to take her out but I ignored her because we just got back from our walk. I thought she was pestering me to play.I can usually read her pretty well. I have been feeding her raw for two weeks now and this is the first time one of them has been sick. I gave her some pumpkin tonight and her stool looks pretty good, just alittle loose but not runny like water. Do you continue with the same amount of raw if they get an upset stomach or do you cut back?

It they are soft but solid, I would make sure to cut off all fat (skin, etc) and maybe cut back a little. You're adding pro-biotics, yes? (plain yogurt or probiotic capsules)
And did you add anything yesterday that was different from what you've been feeding?

I am adding yogurt, but not everyday. Do I need to add the yogurt everyday? I have been feeding chicken necks and thighs, ground beef, chicken liver and gizzards and ground turkey. I have always fed the Sojos but added cooked meat and chicken to it, now I am adding raw instead of cooked.
I use both the Europa and the European style. The only thing I did different was I gave her the European style and I did not mix the two together like I normally do. I am mixing together because I want to be able to alternate between the two foods. I actually think it was the European style, not the raw that made her sick. I notice that none of the dogs seem to be digesting the carrots in the food. I always see them in their stool. Do I need to add a digestive enzyme?

That would be my top question, too. New/more organ meat or new/more fat?

I would go back to what I fed when there was no problem.
Then I would slowly and much more gradually make the change that triggered the problem (unless it was a change that I didn't have to make at all).
I'd feed lightly and simply for a day or two to soothe the gut. Soothing an inflamed gut way trumps balance over a few days.

Not using it definitely didn't trigger explosive diarrhea (or any diarrhea).
I don't know whether the dog needs it every day. For me, it's something I can do to populate a system that either has an obvious immunity problem (allergies in one of my dogs) or that was probably screwed up at one time or another by vaccines and antibiotics right at the time that the developing immune system needed exposure to as many beneficial bacteria as possible.
I saw enough improvement in the allergic dog to convince me that the benefits I was reading about in the recent books and web material on probiotics were real -- at least for this dog.
It's a fast-developing area of research, and I can't cite authoritative vet manuals (yet).
But if I had a dog who did not do well with yogurt, I'd be giving a probiotic supplement. I am that sold.
JMO, and I'm not a health professional.

No. I aim for balance over time.
This is kind of a hijack of Lisa's thread, but we have a great and informative forum on raw feeding (one of the best around, IMHO), any time you want to start a thread.

Click on "new topic" at the top (blue lettering), and start any natural-feeding thread.
