Cool. Sounds like you have a wonderful set up and are covering all the bases as well.
Please, keep us posted on your progression with this.
Um, only thing is, if any of us want to comment on the breeder you have linked us to we will send you a private message.
I believe the rules of this board require us to do it that way.
I do not think posting the link is outside the boundaries at all though.....

Geoff Empey, I believe, has a nice little first time Mal and from what I know, he is doing really well with her. Hopefully the other Mal owners jump in here.
Hi James yes I was a beginner handler and got a a prey monster when I was looking for a pet. I wasn't really prepared for what I got and learnt as I went along and know I am a very happy with my dog. I compete and train in French Ring Sport and really enjoy that plus my dog excels at it.
I'm only going to say that looking for a PP dog a Malinois may be to prey oriented or it may be easier to find a Czech Line GSD that would fit better for a PPD.
To me a Malinois is a better sport dog but as a PPD for the most part you will have a harder time to find a Malinois to do that type of work vs a real GSD.
I love my Malinois and I can't ever see myself not ever owning one now. Once you've found your breed .. thats that!
Thanks so much for your input, (that goes for everybody) if you have a few spare minutes the URL of the breeder I am interested in is posted in my previous reply.
They have a very reputable working line, whereas most of the GSD breeders in my area, have 1 imported dog of great history (Most Czech funnily enough) and a not so great partner - there are exceptions, but every litter I have inspected has really failed to impress.
Not to mention... Malinois are the best looking dog in the world in my opinion. Everything about them appeals to me from colouring to shape to athleticism.
Its a tough decision.

Like has been stated before, yes, you can find mals with minimal to no drive, but if you want to get into sport work, you need a dog with good to great drive.
I'll take that one step further:
It is better to get the best dog of a breed you can handle, than a lesser dog of a breed you can't. It's pointless getting a crappy dog to make it easier to handle if you want the dog for work.

That is very sound advice
I have invited my father (former protective services unit officer with years of experience with protection dogs) and the trainer/owner of the training school I want to take my dogs to (he conveniently lives 3 doors down from me) to dinner tonight.
They will be having a read through this thread, and they are also going to be swamped with questions from me (as both have seen my previous dogs and training capabilities).
I'll report back tomorrow, im hoping to make a decision by end of this weekend if not sooner so I can check out a few prospective litters I am super interested in.

"I realise they need multitudes of exercise a strong leader and a capable handler and I believe I can be all of those things with the preparations I have made and the support I have sought through professionals."
Then what are you waiting for? I think you will be fine.

No it's not.
You clearly know what you want. When people say Mals aren't for the first time owner- they mean a different type of first-timer.
It sounds like you are perfectly equipped to wrangle a Malinut.

hey, can i tell a story, promise ill be good, when i was working for the sheriffs dept, one of the new K9 officers was given a mali, talk about a high drive, this dog was crazy, in a good way, they left the dog in the trailer to go out and do something in the yard, "BOOM" 2 seconds later the dog jumped right thru the glass window, scared the sheeyt out of us. glass everywhere, dog came running over, unhurt looked at us like "what, dude lets play" talk about non stop. needless to say the handler at the time coulndt handle the dog , and they gave it to another dept. Beautiful dogs though. hows my spelling

Yup. That sounds like a Mal alright.
Of course, one of my husband's GSDs did that once too, but that dog was an oddball. He also crushed doorknobs constantly.
Mals are definitely intense, but they are a blast to work.
Our Mal in Iraq, Orie... that dog was something else.
Any time he saw me coming with my body armor on, his mission in life was to drive his front paws through my chest, grab the collar yoke and drag me to the ground. He was too cool, Orie.
