LOL that was the most amusing read i have had for a long time, thanks.
i have to go work with a client but i will be back to explain myself.......
I am sure that you meant backchaining too, or breaking the exercise up into small steps and starting with the last one first, teaching each step separately before "chaining" them together.
Katherine and connie you are right i ment starting with the dog in the finished position proofing that position and then working on the second last behaviour and so on. it is a wonderfull way to teach complex skills, and maintains drive.
if you havent thought about teaching a dog using back chaining as you all call it i highly recomend it. something that this method workes realy well with is teaching your dog to get a drinkout of the fridge......yes i have done this also trained a dog to spell his name. any way the training for getting the drink would be (brefley)
sitting on the lounge (sofa) with an empty can have your dog hold the can and give it to you.
sitting on the lounge roll the can and get the dog to retreve it.
place the can closer to the fridge go sit on the lounge get the dog to fetch.
now you have to get active, teach the dog to tug a rope tug. attach it to handel of fridge, get dog to tug untill it opens.
after the tug and dore open is consistant place the empty can in ease vew, get the dog to open the fridge, make it ease for him and hold the dore open, tell him to retreve the can, if you have done it right the dog should offer the can to you or better walk to the lounge.
fade out extra commands (chaining the indavidual exercises) and fade out your presence.
this is back chaining you start with the finished position and work backward the best thing about this is the speed the dog learns at. the down side is people have a hard time under standing how it works.
PS you may have noticed i'm horrible at spelling......something to do with a bad childhood and skipping school to be around animals usually dogs
