If I understand Will's comment correctly it seems that dogs need to be trained also to put on a good show. I could be mistaken however.
Either way, a little brainstorming does not hurt, does it?
You're not mistaken, training for the "show" is also a part of ppd training ( usually the easiest part, of course ).
And this forum is for "thinking out loud"....so it didn't hurt at all!
And sport training as in SchH or FR would accomplish 85% of what your requirements seem to be. Add a little alert bark training and you're there.
I agree with Alyssa. If you don't want him to be bored he doesn't necessarily have to be a PPD. He can do Ring, Schutzhund, and even herding! Any activity is good!
Michelan man, who/what is that? Schutzhund or Ring, I will certainly look into those possibilities, although the total lack of clubs here would be a bottleneck. It is a pity, but I am the about the only weirdo here who does some training (BDFG) with her/his dog, even as a trainer with very little experience.
It would be nice though if there were dog training clubs here, the youth here always complain they are bored (not enough to do, etc), I cannot think of a much more fun and healthy passtime, my 6 year old daughter loves to participate in the frisbee game after the training, who knows maybe in 20 or 30 yrs she gets to be the next moderator or a female version of Bernard or the other great, fantastic trainers here on the board ( joke! about the part about my daughter).
