My dogs Bindi and COdy have their own crate, and I do not allow them to interchange them. THat is their special spot. They take naps during the day and gladly run into their crate. They also sleep at night in them, and if we go somewhere for an extended time they stay in them. I am very grateful for the training from Ed about this. This is the first time I used crates, and love them! My dogs love their crate too!
I feed their large soup bones in their crates too.

I have to confess to being a crate hoarder - 4 dogs and 20 crates.... Granted some are soft-sided or wire suitcase style so my home does not have crates stacked to the ceiling For the most part they have their own crates. I have 2 aluminum 400 crates in my family room where my males are crated while I am gone from the house. They each have a specific one they go to.
I did not designate a specific crate for each, it just became a habit for them to go to a specific crate. However, when I am home the doors to the crates are open and while one male rarely goes into the crates when I am home, the other one will go into either crate to snooze if I am watching TV. So he seems to have no particularity as to which crate he hangs out in when I am home.

6 dogs and 19 here Ingrid.....
All are airline plastic, aluminum or the folding wire crates.....soft sided would be play toys here at my house.
All my dogs have their own. When I rotate them for their time in the house I switch crates as well. Drives hubby NUTS. hee hee
They all know their crates and no matter how the crates are placed they go to their own. If I use one dogs crate for another dog, the restlessness and sniffing drives me up a wall.

My Chi's aren't crated (I know, I know..) But the two RR's each have thier own crates. They always go to thier own crates for eating and sleeping. Although when I let them out after a meal, they will each go check the others crate to make sure nothing was left... They never seem to notice or be bothered by the fact the the other dog is in thier crate. So, they each prefer thier own, but don't appear to be territorial of it.
2 lg. dogs, 3 crates...I have a ways to go to catch you guys!

2 dogs, each has their "own" crate. Harley eats in his crate always, and both dogs nap in their crates and retreat to their crates for quiet time, or if they are worried about something like if we are moving furniture around.
3 medium-sized extra crates and one large x-pen, one small x-pen used for travel or for fosters, one outside dog run for fosters, too.

2 pups - each has their own crate.
I have the crates at different ends of the room, so they can have their own 'private time' while in their crates.
I also have a sheet over top of the crates, and drop the sheet at night so they feel ( I think! LOL) they are safe inside a den.
Dogs are den animals.
They may sniff the others' crate, but never settle into the others' crate.
Hope this helps!
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

I have 5 kennels (2 out 3 in), 3 crates, and a 4 dog trailer that I use interchangeably with crates.
While I tend to keep each dog to their own kennel or crate, it is more for my convenience to remember who is where than it is for them and I really don't care if they go in and out of eachothers crates or kennels.
There is a certain amount of sharing that goes on, because I don't want to build 2 more outdoor kennels, and I don't want more than one crate taking up space in my living room, but none of the dogs really care either way.

My dogs "know" their own crates and stick with them. They eat in their crates and do not allow the other to go into them-it's their space. At night when it's time to go in their house, they go straight into their own spot. It's something I enforced from the beginning and has worked for me.
I have the crates right next to each other- they are slid into a closet just inside a mudroom and we took the door off the closet so they would fit. My dogs are about the same size=same size crates.
I should mention that I use the plastic crates since they seem to hold the hair in better inside the house. I have a wire crate in the garage and an extra plastic crate (smaller medium sized) that I used when my dogs were still pups. More crates than dogs!
