Hey Matt, along the lines of what Connie said we had a boxer that we had spayed very young and if I remember right what the vet described as a weak sphyncter was a meant as a hormone related problem where it didnt develop like it normally would have. I think we medicated for about a year and weaned her off and the incontinence never came back.

Yes, that was exactly what I meant.
Low-level HRT, then weaned off.
Kinda surprised that this vet did not mention it, actually.

It was quite a while ago but I don't remember it as heavy duty, expensive, or invasive. I could be mistaken, but I thought it was a simple and easy first step. That may have been because he was aware of the early spay though??

That would be my take too: low-level hormone replacement with a very good possibility of weaning her off.

There was a quick mention of the post-spay hormonal issues between me and my vet, but she was spayed so long ago we didn't really pursue that avenue... I think that's why? Is that reasonable?
Yeast infection did not come up at all, if there was a yeast infection would there then have been some WBC's in her urine?
And I guess its all relative, but our vet is "uber-holistic" so any type of pharaceutical is considered last resort, for right or wrong...
And Connie, thanks for editing my subject line

Did the peeing start to coincide with frustrations and speak of divorce?
I would immediately look at the stress level in the home. As you know, dogs pick up on EVERYTHING. The house is probably an unpleasant place for both 'mom and dad' therefore she is stressed. She may be resorting to old ways, if she feels anxious about her owners parting or quarreling. Try to keep her schedule as regular as possible, and remember that any negative energy in the house, esp btwn the humans is picked up on VERY heavily by the dog.
Also remember that when you pet her that state of mind is re-enforced. If she's showing stress signs and you're petting her (for your own sake or hers) you are essentially rewarding that and telling her it is good/ok to be stressed. As hard as it is, let her work through it and reward positive behavior.

Update:
The chinese herbs seemed to be the solution, but after 10-12 days Gypsy started having accidents again. So, my vet's idea of a last resort was the hormone replacement. She prescribed 25mg of Proin 2x a day. From the first day I starting giving Gypsy the Proin she was accident free. It has been a full week now without incident, and fingers crossed that this success will continue. Also, I'm hoping that when the stress at home subsides (Oct 1) everyone will be feeling much better. Thanks all for your input, much appreciated!

I'm so glad!
I've done low-level hormone replacement with a spayed dog and had immediate success too. In fact, I don't know the mechanism, but I was able to wean my senior off the HRT gradually. I'd discuss it with the vet, however, and not do it on my own.

Point taken, but just out of curiosity, how long did you give the medicine for? I think another member mentioned he/she started the weaning off process after about a year?
