even though its illegal in massachusetts I carry a 30. dollar stun baton 18 inches long for unleashed dogs that are aggressive towards my 4 month old gsd when we are walking. Being in the city pit bulls brought up to be aggressive run rampant and the owners actually encourage their dogs to attack.

Did you report this off-leash uncontrolled dog who accosted you and your on-leash controlled dog?
Hi Connie,
I wasn't aware we can report it. The only thing though was it happened on the sidewalk outside his house. He could have said we were on his property, and turn the tables against us.
It's typical suburbia setting, and we were keeping to the sidewalk, minding our own business. I am so affronted by the dog owner's attitude that his dog couldn't possibly have been aggressive towards my puppy. He didn't even come out despite the yelping and snarling till I SCREAMED at his dog. I inspected Janka before leaving his area to make sure she wasn't hurt because her legs were wet from the other dog's saliva. But there were no bite marks.
I definitely have been seriously considering some sort of protection. My only concern is a crazy dog-owner would retaliate if I acted out in defense with the pepper spray or a stick. There are some nuts out there, and I usually walk my dog by myself since my husband comes back really late from work.

Don't take your pupper to an area you can't control. It sucks but clubs and controlled parks are the best bet.
Yeah, but one wouldn't expect having to need control while strolling in a community setting. It's frustrating, but yes, I will find other places to walk my puppy w/o that sort of stress.
I certainly wasn't expecting that, but now I know to avoid that little street. I just think it is a real shame we can't even walk around a nice and quiet neighbourhood without worrying about our dogs.
It's frightening the number of incompetent owners out there. Not to say I am perfect, but I try to be responsible and be a do-righter with my animals.
Maybe I should stick that emu head in my freezer on that dude's front lawn. I am sure my puppy wouldn't mind that sacrifice. Revenge is best served cold.
Hehehe. Just joking.

Use your stick on the nuts, even better you could wave it around while chasing them or their dog and yelling like a banshee and the nuts will think you are nuts and steer clear. But of course I don't know anyone who would do something so undignified. ROFLMAO

90% of the population responds one way to high-quality pepper spray.
About 30 seconds after it hits them, they grab their face in pain, and are too worried about the feeling of lit gasoline on their face, to be much of a threat to you.
The other 10% is more or less unfased, and then you need to bust 'em in the collarbone and nuts with a stick.

I carry pepper spray with me for this very reason.
I also have a problem here with very bold coyotes that will stand their ground, run away, and come back 30 seconds later growling. I've never had to use the spray on the coyotes yet because I've always been able to get back to my garage when they took off for a few seconds and then get something better to take care of the problem.
The dog doesn't know that coyotes are bad yet, and he appears to want to go play with them. Not good.
But, I won't hesitate to spritz a strange dog with the pepper spray. Some little girl had her snarling/barking Britney Spaniel by the collar the other day and it looked like it was going to pull her arm off trying to get to my dog. I had the spray out and ready if she let go.

My BF saved himself from getting jumped by a group on the N.Y. subway by acting like a raving lunatic. Unfortunately, it didn't help the old woman they targeted next.
I've had to confront off-lead dogs and irresponsible owners both in my yard and out on walks. I carry a stick now when we're out-and-about. Even if I never use it, just having it in my hand makes me feel more confident and minimizes any stress traveling down the leash during an encounter.

I know this sound harsh.
But I just moved to a new nieghboorhood and have a real bad problem with loose dogs I talking 1 to 2 dogs with every block.
I went and bought a metal leash the one that have the links the big ones.
I have found that one good hit with that and a dog goes running. I just hook it to me belt loop. And all 4 dogs I walk are trained to get behind me on command.
I have a major problem with stray and mean dogs. On my walks

Pepper spray allows you to get the dog from farther away, is less likely to cause lasting physical harm, and when an owner has their dog come home whining with a face full of pepper spray he will probably start keeping the dog secured.
And trust me, the owner will figure out what happened. If you've ever gotten pepper spray on your hands, you will know pretty quickly.

About a year ago, I was walking in our subdivision when a chow mix came running out barking at us. A little girl about 7 years old ran out and grabbed the dog by the collar, when the dog turned around and bit her. As she ran to the house the dog came back at us. I had the end of my leather leash ready in hand, and was holding my dog by the collar when the dog came in. When the dog got in my personal space, I reared back and popped him as hard as I could across the nose. That dog ran back to the house yelping the whole way. The next day when we walked by that dog would not even come off the the front door step. I never had a problem with that dog again. Most dogs I have encountered have probably never had someone stand up to them and fight back if needed.
