Despite my hesitance to switch completely over to raw (will a boarding kennel get it right if I have to leave on short notice? what if I get called for disaster response? what about Iraq?).
Maybe you could keep THK on hand?
THK and chicken 1/4ers, or other chicken RMB's are easy enough, and would be fine for a long term feed, IMO. It would probably even be fine to feed chicken only (feeding through a whole chicken) for a time, just to keep it simple for someone caring for her. Surely a kennel or family member keeping her long term could get that simple menu plan right.
For the record, and for anyone looking to feed a raw diet, variety is best. While it would be fine to have a chicken only diet for some time, keeping that menu forever wouldn't be the greatest idea.
Alyssa, I know that you know this, this isn't directed to you. I just wanted to get that out there so that a new feeder didn't interpret me as saying a chicken only diet was good enough and that there was no need for variety.
You're right, THK is probably my best bet.
I need to start adding it to her diet to she is accostomed to it.
I'm sure that my husband will do fine, but I know if I get deployed again, there will be times my husband will have to travel out of state, leaving the her in a boarding kennel.
I'm sure they'd do fine, I just stress too much.
It was hell enough last time around, and I don't want to imagine my dog thrown into the mix.
I wish I could trust my mother to care for her in that event, but I know she'll insist on trying to "socialize" my dog with her standard poodle. She also takes the poodle to dog parks and is amused when her poodle displays signs of dog aggression... "See, poodles are tough, too".
I wonder if her breeder (who feeds raw) would board her for short periods of time, in an emergency...
I'll have to persue that tomorrow.
