Shepherds can be born with hind dew claws. Angela, do you mean that they're not supposed to be there on shepherds?
I've read that the hind dew claws are usually removed from shepherd pups soon after birth, if the pups are born with them.
Aja was born with hind dew claws and they were never removed. It's weird, they're fully formed claws but there's no bone connecting them to her legs. There's only skin, so they kinda flop around
Haven't caused any problems or anything. Vet offered to remove them if Aja was ever under for some surgery (a spay for example).
Keleah, congratulations on the new puppy. I would also love to see pictures!
If you are going to remove them, do them soon. A rescue we had had both rear dew claws, and the left one became accidentally caught(and ripped off) in the kennel. Not a pretty sight, and the second one was removed at the same time. On an adult dog, stitches are usually required, but it healed up quicker than the one that was torn off. As pups, they heal pretty quick, but are usually done a few days after birth. Sooner the better if you are removing them...
my 2 cents
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.
Update: went to vet and she's ok. The lump is almost gone andvet says it's not a hernia or anything serious-most likely a bug bite. And as far as her dew claws, they seem pretty well attatched(I still want them removed, just so they don't get ripped off later- yikes)but the vet can remove them when we get her spayed. So, I'm happy and at ease now.
