My GSd is 7mo and has itched since the day he came home, about 12 weeks.
And he was probably itching before you got him. Is he from a breeder? ...rescue?...or what? Can you get any history on him? Did he get shots (and which ones) before/after you got him? What do you feed him? What did he eat before?
I'm in the San Diego area, too. It seems to be a bad area for inhalant allergies, pollens, etc.
There was a thread a couple weeks ago or so (I'll look for it if you can't find it) about dosing of antihistamines. I don't remember the details, but one of the main points was that dogs can handle (or need) much higher doses to be effective than humans do, so a "baby dose" probably won't do much. My experience (and others) with Benadryl is that it did nothing, but there are others to try.

He had all his shots and has a tattoo id. He was also microchiped. The food is the same (Royan Canin)He has had all his shots and rattlesnake Vac. I did not have any luck before and gave up. I just started giving him DermCare a different brand and seems to be helping. I am open to other ideas. I think the e-collar Irritated the skin and at some point he scratched the area and caused the scab.It will heal in time if I can keep him from scratching it.
If only I could train him to talk???

No luck with what steps, exactly?
That food would not make my short list. Food allergies are much less common than flea hypersensitivity and inhalant/environmental allergies, but I still want to point out that allergies develop over repeated exposure. "Same food as always" not only means nothing positive, but indicates that allergies have indeed had time to develop.

You had no luck doing what?
I agree that food is not a likely cause, but regardless, you need to get this dog on a good diet. Maybe others here are familiar with DermCare, I'm not. What company and what are the first half-dozen or so ingredients? You'll find a lot of info on this site about recommended brands as opposed to what we like to call "crap in a bag."
