Yote has a very small tired window as well, and if he is bored he is being naughty
If I am desperate for something to keep him busy I have been known to put some bits of meat into an empty water bottle then screw the lid on and let him work on getting it out.
frozen kongs are always good as are bones.
He is also a big fan of shredding stuff so sometimes I tape up a small box with treats inside and let him go to town destroying it. I keep him confined to a small space to do this though so there arent bits of cardboard everywhere.
Kasey is a very mellow dog that easily settles - he is laying at my feet as I type, which is where he is 99% of the time. But because exercise and training is a pretty small percentage of his time, I like to give him things 'to do' sometimes.
Ahhhh.....it sounds like you want to give him a little more thinking time which is a great idea for what your goals are for him.
This article has some good suggestions you may enjoy, though it does require some of your time which may be a mute point if you are busy with other tasks. If that is the case; the kong, cube and toy options are all excellent ideas.
Another thing I like to do with my dog when I am working on the computer is call him to me and have him lay on my feet (they are always cold). This fits in well with my "let sleeping dogs lie" mentality but also gives him a job and increases our bond.
Sheila and Carol I am with you....why cant he just be a dog/pup and not a Mini me/mini man?....leave him to dream about big bones in the sky is my philosophy...but then again I am a dumb blond what do I know?

Shiela, thanks for that link to the article on thinking exercises! That is just the kind of stuff Kasey loves! He puts his ball under things on purpose just so he can try to fish it back out! Those exercises they list in the article will be great to do with him! And they are sure a lot cheaper than the wooden puzzles!
