My rule with carpet is buy when on sale get the 2nd cheapest option - which makes it practically disposable.
My current one was £4.99 (about $3) a metre, did my whole living room for about £60 - it's been 18 months and it is only now showing wear and tear, will probably replace in 6 months or so.

We've done laminate before in areas where hardwood floors aren't possible or affordable and been very pleased with the results. Unlike the older style laminates the new floors stand up to dog nails really well imo better than traditional hard wood flooring.
I just replaced part of my living room with laminate wood floors-love it but the dogs kinda slide around on it when their excited so I was going to do the other half with a berber-but it sounds like i might want to re-think that and either do more laminate or just a regular type carpet- I'm glad someone brought up this question
Screw carpet except for a theater room. If you aren't worried about acoustics, staging (theater room ish) go tile/hardwood. My carpet is old and stained before I bought the house so I don't care but having cleaned up pee on carpet and tile, tile/hard floors is much more preferable. I'd rather the dog play on hard floors anyway, they get to do the James Brown slide.

Slippery hardwood or laminate floors are not a great idea for dogs with HD, ED, or arthritis. Their condition can worsen from trying to grip a slick floor or from falling down on one. Some kind of traction is better than none at all, IMO.
I've seen cases made for the slippery floors being the cause of HD. I don't know if it's true or not. We keep runners and area rugs on the slick floors.
I'd imagine the dogs were doing the sort of stuff you typically see in dog food commercials- Tom Cruise-style slides across the floor after running to the door, to the food bowl, when called, etc.
