My nephew lived with us for several years, but he been gone now for almost three. When comes over to visit which is rare lately Loki still seems to love him every bit as much as he did when he living here. They all also love my parents just as much and are just as happy to see them no matter how long it has been since they saw them. For nico that was probably well over two years, but when she stayed with them over the summer she did just fine like she had been with them her whole life. She gets super anxious being kept away from home normally, so she obviously remembered them and was comfortable with them.
So I think they do have some sort of long term memory.
Yote ate part of a magic eraser the other day, he puked it up though and I was highly relieved.
yeah, i guess i didn't think she'd remember him b/c it's not like they spent a lot of time together. but it was such a great event for her (sigh), that maybe the whole thing is burned into her little brain.
goats indeed! neb started eating a plastic sled....i kept finding orange plastic in his poops :yikes:
My observation is that they do remember people. My son moved to Texas in September and came to visit at Christmas and Hans was very excited to see him seemed to remember him quite well.
My daughter and son-in-law come to the house for dinner about three times a month. Every visit my daughter fills a kong with peanut butter for Hans. He remembers it well enough to find the kong and bring it to her every time.
As for the goat part, Hans is especially fond of eating paper towels and napkins, especially if they have been used around food. The amazing thing to me is that they pass right through him totally unprocessed. They go in white, they come out white.
My other husky used to eat paper towels, they would come out whole and totally white. It scared me to death because a couple of times he partially pooped one out and had to run around the backyard with it hanging out of his bottom.
I have seen another area where dog memories are good. My friend got an Akita puppy from a breeder. She got the puppy at about 8 weeks old. 4-5 months went by and when we had a home school event at the park the breeder brought the pups mom. As soom as the mom and pup saw each other they rejoiced and snuggled together and played. It was obvious they had not forgotten each other.
Also, I hear Ceasar say dogs do not remember bad incidents in their lives. But if that is true why do they respond fearfully, or aggressively, when they are confronted with that situation again? My new dog is very afraid of a raised arm. She used to run all over the house when we raised our arm to do something, even something like hang a picture, something not even directed at her. Now she is begining to realize that we are not going to hurt her. I wonder about this sometimes. Or say a dog is attacked by another dog, then becomes agressive toward dogs approaching him, why would he become agressive if he didn't remember what had happend to him when he was attacked.
What do you think? Do dogs remember bad circumstanes in their lives?
I notice they sure to remember the good things!
We found my parents dog as a pup that had been dumped in my elementary school playground. Of course I convinced her to bring her home. She was COVERED in ticks and bumps and bruises and had obviously been abused and neglected before being dumped.
Since the first day she came home and even now 17 years later she is terrified of brooms, to this day if you sweep near her she will go hide. She had also always been somewhat hand shy and if you make too sudden of a movement near her face she shies away.
Something horrible happened to her as a pup and she seems to have some sort of lifelong memory of it.
I think the grossest thing Hana has ever eaten has been my son's tissues after he'd blown his nose in them. He left one on the coffee table and I went into the other room. When I came back he was in shreads on the floor. It was so gross. Other than that if She gets a hold of a tennis ball she'll rip all of the green fuzz off and eat it. You don't know how many times I've picked up her poop and have seen this green fuzz in it!!
She was approched by 2 of the neighbors dogs a few weeks ago. They're huge chocolate labs that are not controlled at all. (they dragged this little japanese woman across the street to get to Hana) They were trying to play with her but she got really scared and just crouched down shaking while I tried to pull them off her. Now everytime we see them she runs behind me and shakes.
I think dogs have good memories. They remember smells at least.
