Our rescue girl, Shelby, licks the carpets and she also seems to vomit more than any dog I've ever had- usually bile. She's been checked by our vet (blood work, urinalyisis, etc) and he thinks she just has a sensitive stomach like many German Shepherds. She also has little or no food drive. I guess if I had a sensitive stomach and felt nauseated a lot I wouldn't have much food drive either. Is there anything safe and natural to give to a dog with a sensitive stomach? Oh, I feed her a raw diet- she won't eat anything else. Thanks in advance for an advice! Char

Some carpet cleaners can cause dogs to become very sick. It may smell good to the dog and maybe even taste good, but it's not. Also, Swiffer wet jet is potentially bad for dogs who walk on the floors cleaned with it and then lick their paws. Just a heads up on that.

Not to go off topic, but the Swiffer thing was a hoax.
How often does she eat? Bile happens on an empty stomach. Try smaller meals more often. Also, try enzymes and/or probiotics.
What exactly does she eat?

Ditto. How many meals per day, what does the vomit look like, what exactly is the diet, what time of day does she vomit, and how often and how long does she carpet-lick?

From my personal experience closet...I remembered this. Mia, my female Pit, used to do all of these things. I was thinking she didn't lick carpet though, but that's because I don't HAVE any carpeting. She DID however, lick my comforter on my bed, and sometimes my couch. The magic thing for her was 100% raw, in small meals, with probiotics (Garden of Life brand- Primal Defense Ultra). I think the carpet licking has more do do with not feeling well, or perhaps lacking in nutrients. Dogs who are bloating often lick carpet, so I align it with stomach upset/discomfort.
Mia was a rescue. An over-vaccinated, botched-spay surviving rescue. Her immune system and gastrointestinal system were a total disaster when I got her. Your girl may have similar issues as a result of humane society "protocol." FWIW.

oops, my bad. I would just assume that it would be bad for a dog-when wet, not dry

Well, it's not "good" I'm sure, but I wanted to point out that the toxicity was proven to be a hoax.

Shelby is fed twice a day, morning and evening. She eats raw ground beef w/organ meat, ground turkey, with organ meat and bone, ground chicken and bone, ground whole Mackeral, chunks of beef heart & green tripe. I am also doing marker training with her once or twice a day, usually the morning and before bedtime at which time I give her either cooked steak, cooked beef roast, cooked beef heart, cooked beef liver or organic buffalo dogs (all diced). Even before I started doing marker training I gave her something to eat before bed becasue I was told that an empty stomach can cause a dog to vomit. Now today she has not eaten anything so far. She refused to eat her ground turkey this morning even though I heated it for her, but she also hasn't thrown up at all. The throwing up is sporadic- she can go two weeks without a problem. Shelby typically throws up in the morning before breakfast.
She usually licks the carpet in the evening, but I don't let her continue. They are fairly new oriental rugs that have never been cleaned. Oh yes and she also likes to lick the fabric on the couch.
I use only water and vinegar on my floors. I am very environmentally aware and try to use all natural products as much as possible.
As for vaccines, she was fully vaccinated a year ago. I haven't given her vaccines since I got her 9 months ago. I just had her titers done and they are good. By law I have to give her rabies, but I am holding off. I don't use flea or tick prevention unless it there is problem- haven't used it since we got her. I haven't used heartworm prevention either- just had her checked and she is fine. I'll have to start using it during the mosquito months though. She had very itchy skin when I got her so I did everything I could to solve the itchiness. My last shepherd had allergies and sensitivities, so I've been down this road before. THanks for any advice!
