At one point, sables will be very washed out looking and have little color other than their masks. Then, their coarse outer hairs come in and are generally black. Some go through pretty dramatic color changes until 2 or so. My cousin's dog was a normal sable until about 2, then darkened A LOT and is black sable currently. Xander is a pretty average sable (don't tell him I said that.) I have seen that color (or lack of) before, though not often. You're right; he's got a GSD body/face and Mal coloring. Are the breeders absolutely 100% positive no one else could've gotten to the dam?

Couple of sable some really dark. A blonde and a red pup. Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!!
