Susan, that was a beautiful story, that dog was blessed to have you and your family to make her life a happy and long one.
I sing to my dogs as well, and they all seem to really like it. When Yote was a super fearful pup singing seemed to calm him and get his attention focused on me instead of his fear.
I think a clicker might be a great tool for this dog. It is totally neutral of emotion and is such a clear precise indicator when they give the right behavior.
Playground equipment combined with tons of high value treats is also helping me to boost the confidence of my older somewhat skittish hound dog.
