There are crazy people running that country! I may be pretty biased, since I LOVE the power breeds, but all the dogs on the list can be, if trained properly, better than most little dogs and other dogs, period. This is JMO
But then again, look at all the BSL going on in our country. Each city has it's own choice dog(s) they pick out to ban, all because some idiot owner didn't know what the hell they were doing.
Just an example. Even Cities and towns in ND there are breeds being banned.
Here they are:
Minot ND Confirmed Banned Pit Bulls Wolf Hybrds.
Velva ND Unconfirmed Banned Rotties
Kenmare ND Confirmed Banned Rotties, Pit bulls and Dobermans
Kildeer ND Unconfirmed
Bismarck ND Unconfirmed
The reason for the wolf-hybrid ban is because alot of the reservations north of Minot have a ton of dogs running loose and a huge problem with unspayed and unneutered dogs up there. I lived in Minot and had a friend who lived up by one Res. and picked up a pup on the side of the road. Kind of looked like a cross between a husky/lab/wolf? not sure though.

Wolf Hybrids are banned in the UK too. In England there is a total ban on the Tosa, Dogo Argentinio and pit bull.
The Irish law is terrible. I work with GSD rescue and we take a lot of GSDs from the pounds in Ireland - as given the law they are generally put down.
I can see where the OP is coming from - If I had to keep a GSD muzzled at all times and on a leash of 4 feet or less, would I really want a GSD? I would probably go for a Mal or Dutchie, to get a similar breed without the restrictions.
By the way there are few leash laws in this country - just certain beaches and parks but that's it.
I love the AB, it is "my" breed of choice for both sport work and as my lay at my feet with a kong type of dog but I agree with Angela and think you may be better served by a livestock guardian breed such as the Pyr or my personal favorites the Kuvasz and Anatolian. Only issues can be finding these breeds true to their original purpose and not bred for show, at least in the US they can be.
We have a few local ranchers that use Maremmas, Pyrs, Anatolians and Kuvasz for livestock guarding, they also cross them on occassion and have produced some Kuvasz/Anatolians that I absolutely drooled over, these dogs are serious in their intended purpose and with someone that can handle and understand a large powerful breed they do well in homes.
i have also been reading about the presa canario, do'es anyone have experience with this breed and would they be a better choice than an AB.? thanks darren.
