If it was for home protection, I would get a Heckler and Koch USP (45 cal). It's very similar to a 1911, however lacks the grip safety (I say it's similar in regards to carrying cocked and locked, also has a decocker). I prefer it because I am German, love HK's, and like to carry a few extra rounds (more then a 1911). I will say the 1911 is the best gun, just prefer my HK (I have a few). I have a few 1911's, my favorite being the Springfield Operator.
Also, for home protection, I would have a shotgun.
I have a huge collection myself, I really like rifles (my AR=15's and AR-10's), however not really suitable for home use (my are suitable because I set them up for CQC use). But I have very close neighbors
I prefer a another rifle as my next gun, something suitable for using in the elements, a nice bug out weapon.
I would like to buy this one this year, as long as I am still allowed to.

HKs are very nice.
I was horribly disappointed when the Army did not follow through on it's plans to contract HK to build a new battle rifle.
*sniff* I was looking forward to an end to the Stoner era.
(I also enjoy my evil black guns, but my faith was shaken a little by how many times my M4 failed me when I needed it... SPORTS my ass...)
As far as "real" rifles go, you really can't go wrong with anything that fires 7.62x51.
Aww heck, the gun whackos are coming out of the woodwork now.

Alyssa, I had seen so much info on the Army and all the testing (with the HK), I agree, it was disappointing.
I actually don't know why if they do stay with the AR-15, why not go with the AR-10, you can have everyone be little snipers
I do like the FN Herstal rifles as well, they are neat. I have the SPR Rifle.
If they don't ever go to HK, I would think this FN would be nice.

Fits a variety of choices, cqc to infantry
OK, now I have to go to bed, goodnight

If you were going to buy 2 guns right now for personal protection, what would they be?
I've already got my dog.
For long distance: AR10T
As a Battle Rifle: The AR10A4
As a general purpose rifle for defense: AR15 in M4 trim
For a shotgun: Benelli Super 90 or Mossberg 590 pump
Hnadgun for defense: Glock 21 or Glock 30
It'd be nice to have several AKs around also, they come in handy to outfit your family members....
Hmmm...... that's more than two, isn't it?

Glock.
Blech.
If we're goin' that direction, Sig Sauer. Much nicer trigger reset. And they don't feel like crap in your hand.

I don't own any fire arms. I've never felt the need and my wife says she wouldn't let me have one. But if we ever change our minds about that I'll know where to go to get advice

Glock's work the moment you take them out of the box. They're very reliable, and magazines are cheap for them.

I carry a Glock 23 off duty. My problem is...it's too easy to discharge one if there's a struggle. Ask any child how to fire a gun and they'll tell you "pull the trigger". Thats all ya gotta do with a Glock.
I carry a 1911 Colt combat elite on duty..If I'm ever in the losing end of a struggle with my Colt I know the gun isn't going bang if the bad guy pulls the trigger unless both safeties are disengaged. That gives me a few seconds to pull my blade and take care of business.
