I also have a dog next door who tries to dig under the fence. They know she does it and someday she is probably going to get her paw or nose bit. I have filled the hole in more than once so that is a concern.
Lori, I know this is going to sound really gross, but put your dogs poop in the hole and don't fill it in with anything else. Just for a little while. The next door neighbors dog will not like it and should stop digging holes into your yard. I did this with my dogs and the neighbors dog (2 fences, one wood and one chain link didn't stop them, till the poop did )
If that doesn't work, just let your neighbor know that if their dog gets bit in the process of digging into YOUR yard, that you won't be held accountable for it. Fair warning for them, and less worry about any possibilty of them wanting you to pay for a vet visit (if it happens)

Rich,
Yes I see what you mean now, thanks for the mental picture, that is how my mind works.
Lori,
both my dogs and the neighbors dogs have dug towards each other, and one of their dogs is a crazy unstable mess who has snapped at both my son and Chad, god only knows what would happen if there was a confrontation between that dog and one of mine...but it is half the size of Yote who is our smallest dog, so I don't think it would end well.
I have found that once a hole is started in a certain area, that no amount of refilling with dirt will stop it from reappearing, Cinder blocks work well for me to patch up problem spots. They aren't pretty though
I have also been known to turn the hose on and put it on the Jet setting and squirt their dog in the face under the fence when he won't knock it off.
That seems to help for a few weeks everytime I do it.

Did you pour that concrete Mike?
My project today is patching yet another hole with green garden fencing.... it will be such a relief to get a new fence.

Scratch that the fence is going in today and tomorrow, they had the materials and the men available so we are going ahead with it.
We decided to go with another chain link because he isn't a climber, just a digger. We are going to use the existing poles and put 6 ft chain link with a piping at the top and bottom plus concrete blocks along the bottom partially buried. It was way cheaper to do it this way and concentrate on getting a gate that will fit perfectly and be secure enough.
Plus no building permits since we are using the existing structure for the fence.
I am so excited to get this done, the stupid fence has been a source of stress for the last several years.

it would be nice if he could sun himself with me checking on him frequently.
I think that's my favorite thing about having a fenced backyard....looking out on the deck and seeing Tucker lying there, in the sun, just takin' it easy and keeping watch....lol
I think it's nice for them to have their own time too!
I've always loved having wooden gates. But solid wood gates, no spaces between the wood or anything like that. My Dad made me a couple for my old place. Probably about 5 feet across and 6 feet high. He rounded the top of the gate & put some fancy scrolling on it. And it was definately solid. You just have to make sure that the hinges you get are capeable of sustaining such a heavy gate.
oh, and here's a link to the concept of Rich's gate (at least this is how im picturing it):
http://www.wood-gates.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/mckinney-double-wood-gates1.jpg
both sides move independently & latch closed in the middle...is that right Rich?
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

What is that green stuff on the ground and how do you get it to grow under your dog? LOL
My (suspected) Husky mix is made of liquid. He can get through holes in chain link that I didn't even know were holes. And somehow, he would always get back in the yard just before I checked on him. A passerby alerted me to the fact once that he was getting out and then going back in. Clever devil! I put up a "ghetto fence" made of plywood. He stays in the yard now! As I can afford it I will definitely be gradually replacing all the chain link in my yard to privacy/wood. (I have a climber too).

I was wondering about the green stuff too!!
We always joke that he is like a mouse, if his nose fits he can fit.

They got two of the three sides of old fencing out today and leveled everything and removed several stumps and small trees that were growing between the fence lines.
They were fast, as they didn't start until early afternoon and were done by 4. They should be totally done with it all by that time tommorow.
Then all we need is a gate!!!

We got the fence all installed with concrete buried around the base.
The new gate is in as of yesterday!!
the invisible fence is installed but not yet turned on because I need to train him with it.
but even just with the new fence and gate he was able to spend most of the afternoon outside enjoying himself.
It was pretty outside so I left the back door open and he came and went as he pleased.
It was so nice for both of us and he is now sleeping soundly on his bed.
I did still check on him a lot though, just to be sure he was safe and not doing something naughty!!!
