I do not think free dental exam includes x-rays. If all she says he needs is a cleaning, I will probably go to my vet who will do cleaning with iv, pre-cleaning blood work and pain meds for just over 300. I am bringing both of my dogs for the free exam. I figure since I am making the drive I might as well have both of them checked out. Just not sure how they will look at Ted's mouth because he growls at vets. Has anyone had experience with dental exams with a dog that does not like vets? Not sure how to approach this one.

Connie, I will re-check with my vets office and it has been about 5 years since a cleaning, extraction, etc. It was my old boxer, but, yes it was 'full blown' cleaning and anesthia.
Of course, anything extra like X-rays or extractions were more, but I don't think I ever paid more than $200. And, the last few years before she died, I had her teeth cleaned at a minimum of every six months.
Of course, every thing is cheaper here in KY than CA and many other places where the cost of living is higher.

One last thing, if I do get Ted's teeth cleaned, I suppose this would be a good time to have his hips x-rayed. I have read Ed's article on this, but any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have one who is spastic at strangers (vet included) doing stuff to his face.
When he had stitches removed from his face, I did it, vet instructing, after a valium (for the dog - not me).
If I were you, I would just tell the vet in advance and discuss ways to deal with it.

Conne, I just called the vets office.
The price is $89.58 and that includes anesthesia, cleaning and ammoxicillin for one week. If you want blood work prior that is an additional $19.
To find out exactly what I paid before, I will probably have to look up canceled checks (which is actually possible, but will take me a few days).
But, yes, it looks like very reasonable based on what you are seeing. However, I don't think that includes X-rays.

 Dang! My world has been rocked...a vet who charges reasonably.

Just under $400 would be "not on sale" at my vet.
That's about what I was quoted to have Oscar's cleaned at the dentist that did his root canal. I would consider her practice to be at the high end of most pay scales, but she is very good... plus, Oscar is a big boy, and the bigger the dog, the pricier the anesthesia...

Don't get excited, yet. Remember I live in South Central Kentucky and our cost of living is less than CA.
Last week it was eighty bucks for skin scraping, cortizone shot and three weeks of clavamox. I think the vet exam part was about $29. It is more for first time, but not by much (I think maybe $35).

Do you have a spare room? LOL
I used to set prices for a vet hospital and am familiar with the costs of drugs and medical supplies, which are pretty much the same wherever you are. Your vet obviously doesn't mark-up the standard 250%, like most vets do.
