I don't know about the cost/benefits, but don't dismiss krill because of the fish allergy. Fish, shrimp/lobster, and bivalves are usually totally separate allergies. I for example can have the first two, but not the third. Krill are inverts much more closely related to shrimp/lobster than fish.
BTW - they are not "clubbed to death." They are shot.
I am in no way supporting PeTA with this post, nor do I necessarily have gripes with hunting as a practice, but it should be said...
Actually, within Canada (which is the largest harvester of seals world wide) regulations state that hunters can use rifles OR a traditional tool that looks a lot like a combination of a hammer and an ice pic. There are guidelines that state the animal should be killed as efficiently as possible with a blow to the head, and that it must be completely dead before skinning, but brute force is absolutely still legal, and commonplace.
I don't know whether the majority of seal OIL comes from Canadian seals (they're big on pelts), or whether hunting practices elsewhere are vastly different, but this remains a very real practice.
Seal hunters are permitted to use rifles while hunting from the sea, but they use clubs on the ice floes, according to Aldworth. That’s because if they use rifles on land or on the ice, there’s a danger that the bullets might ricochet back and wound or kill the hunters.

I'm a little surprised that what Natalya posted isn't common knowledge.
I don't determine my "for" and "against" POVs based on them being the opposite of PETA's, no matter how repugnant the org is to me. (I pretty much suspect that no one here does; a hyperbole to make a point is different.)
As Natalya said, "I am in no way supporting PeTA with this post, nor do I necessarily have gripes with hunting as a practice, but it should be said... "
But back on topic:
