Some anonymous dog saved my dog's life, once, that way. I am glad you suggested this. My current dogs aren't elegible to donate because they are not purebreds, but I hope people will consider it.
I hope your boy makes a full recovery! Good thing you were alert and knew what was happening.

Tracy, oh my gosh, I'm so glad you caught it quickly!!!!!! Poor Luca (and poor you!)
I hope he continues to improve. Please keep us updated!
I didn't know that only PBs could donate blood - I've thought about getting Luc to donate before but never looked to closely into it. I will now!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and well wishes. I visited Luca at the hospital last night, and his condition is stable, but very serious. His vital signs are stabilized, but his red blood cell count is still very low, and he has so far refused any food. This will be a long slow recovery, but I know that he (and I) are up to it.
The rules for canine blood donation may vary at different blood banks. Our local bank here does not require dogs to be purebred. http://stlouisanimalemergencyclinic.org/animalbloodbank.html
This is a link to the requirements at our local blood bank. The one near you may be similar. You'll see that they also offer a pretty valuable package of free and reduced-cost vet care for blood donors, which I didn't realize until all this. I know of one very cuddly Leonberger that will be signing up to donate soon...and a poodle pup too, once he's old enough.
Thanks again all. I'll keep you updated on Luca's progress. Keep the good mojo coming. I'm convinced it can only help.

There is no pure-bred requirements here. My old Dobe used to keep himself in free dog food donating blood. I once got pulled over for speeding when rushing to the emergency hospital with him. As I babbled about, "dog hit by car, ruptured spleen, surgery, my dog needs to donate blood...." the officer just stared at me open-mouthed then finally said, "Lady, I don't know if that's the truth or not, but it's the best damn story I ever heard." No ticket was issued.
Continued healing thoughts for Luca.

There actually aren't any here either, if any other Ontarians are interested.
Luc has applied to one place, and I'm waiting to get the application for OVC since my computer's being weird about opening it.
I've asked though, the place Luc and I applied requires 'yearly vaccinations' and my guys just get the 3-year rabies....hopefully that's not an issue!!!
Not to get off-topic with Luca though! Hope he starts to feel better soon!
