Or you could do what I do...
Sneak dog and crate into the hotel after dark.
(I have a cloth, collapsable crate for such purposes.)
Rules be damned!
Change your cellphone ringtone to a barking dog sound.
If anyone asks, you get a LOT of phone calls.

My family used to do this all the time... with our Pomeranian. A 7lb dog is a LOT easier to sneak through a lobby, and whenever the maids caught us, they just thought he was adorable and looked the other way...
I've also snuck a birdcage with 2 parakeets into a hotel before... the chirping and twittering from under my crafty towel coverup sure got some strange looks.
The ringtone trick is a new one though - I'll remember that!

Yes, the dog-friendliness of motels in general in this country has changed drastically in the last decade. I read that 70% of American motels now accept pets, at least on a limited basis (forgot where I read it -- sorry).
This is a state-by-state listing site: http://www.petswelcome.com/milkbone/map.html

From visiting the site it seems they are pet-friendly but only up to a size (weight) limit of no more than 35 lbs.

Ya don't sneak through the lobby.
You insist on a room by an external, side exit. Explain, for example, that you smoke and wish to be able to step outside quickly to smoke a cigarette. You don't want a smoking room, because your companion is allergic to smoke.
Park your vehicle near the side exit and wait until evening (or whenever there aren't many people around.)
Geez... I sound like a criminal.
I'd be more than happy to just pay the "animal in room, deep cleaning" $250 fee up front, but they won't let me do that.
So, I gamble, and if caught, will happily pay it.

Geez... I sound like a criminal.
Nah, more like someone who has CLEARLY done this before!!
We paid for a dog friendly room in a hotel once that gave Oscar an "overnight" kit, complete with a miniscule dog bowl, a squeaky toy, some crap treats, and a very cheap bed that I'm reasonably certain would have instantly combusted on contact with any type of heat source... I would have MUCH rather they kept all the made-in-china garbage and just made the darn "dog fee" lower!

That's kinda funny, actually.
I live in a seaside town, and when my relatives come they generally stay in a motel just a few blocks away from me.
The dog fee is reasonable, IMO ($10/night), which is explained as being "administrative" (the dog owners must leave a cellphone number at the front desk if they go out without the dog; I guess that that, plus the room check at departure to get the deposit back, are the "administration" costs).
The $75 dog deposit is refunded at checkout, after the room is looked at. It appears that all they are looking for is potty indiscretions, because the checkup is a matter of a minute.

There are a ton of dog-friendly hotels.
Sadly, Great Wolf Lodge is NOT one of them.

Perhaps the dog kit was along the lines of little mints on the pillows for humans.... or perhaps they consider it an insurance policy of sorts.
Dog bowl so they don't drink out of the toilet, toy and treats so they don't eat the furniture, and the cheapo bed so they have their own bed. Of course they'd prefer that to all other furniture in the room.
I have seen some strange beliefs in hotels across the country. One hotel gave us some extra sheets at check in to place over the crates to keep the "allergies and fleas" inside. If we didn't leave the sheets over the crates, we were supposed to pay a fee to clean it so they could get all the "allergies and fleas" out of the room.
Clean, dry coolers with the drain plug left open for ventilation can make nice, incognito hallway transport devices for the right size animal. We've had good luck with that when we needed to turn 3 cats into 2 on the road.
Geez... I sound like a criminal.
Nah...job hazard. Your line of work just exposes you to some creative thinkers. It rubs off after a while...but of course, only in good ways like this.
