Adding to Steve's excellent advice if I may;
Make sure you stomp out the starting boxes far enough away from one another that the dog doesn't pick up scent from the next box over. Also start from the up wind side of the first box. Same reason. You don't want the dog to be picking up scent from the next box if it's up wind from the box your working.
Make sense?

I like the Patterson book also!
Thanks Bob, makes sense and good point. What does everyone use for treats? My dog seems to go crazy for hot dogs. I assume that would work well. Strong scent and he likes them.
I like the Zukes Salmon treats. Small, they're dark so they don't stand out against the grass, and a good scent. If you really want to see Alyssa make fun of me, don't encourage the lame attempts. You don't reward behaviors you don't want. Ignore it until she really hits me. Then mark with a "Yes, Good Girl, Thats Fine".

Many use hot dogs. Some say they have to much scent and distract from the track itself. My first FST dog (Border Terrier, early 90s) was trained on them. That was before I ever used the boxes. LOVE the boxes!
My two GSDs both work for kibble.
Some use a low odor dry treat.
Just cut "whatever" in small pieces so they can't see them.
fwiw, my pup eats his breakfast on a scent pad (well, actually 2 scent pads), but he's on kibble. i've also used dry cat food, small pieces of nature's balance treat logs & bil-jac treats.
a hungry dog is much more motivated to go looking for the good stuff
I just started using Natural Balance rolls - thanks to Alyssa's recommendation - and they work wonders. Great smell, don't stand out visually too much from the ground, and the "make-up" of the roll is more inline with what I feed (in terms of organ meat).
Kaiser likes it and we are now using it as marker treats as well. We tried the hot dogs but they must have been to salty or something - he reacted poorly eventhough he loved them too.
