Hey Jo, with Lucy being older and you really not having a way to know what if any training she's ever had I'd take it easy with the prong. I would use it gently and more in a way of guiding her then correcting her. Gentle, kinda easy pops like a tap on the shoulder getting her attention.
Tap on the shoulder is good visual. Yeah, I don't think she is being willfull. She does fine MOST of the time, then, brakes on, skids to a stop, and off her nose goes which is followed by her body. It wouldn't be so bad if I weren't walking "head up, shoulders back, eyes forward, meaningful stride" (paraphrase Miss Connie...:smile I am glad I live in the country and people can't see a 25 lb beagle pull a 130 lb woman into the ditch...LOL.
I actually can't imagine giving her a level 10 (which I keep picturing as bringing a dog close to being on his "knees" begging forgiveness). I mean ever. I think that would completely break her and/or destroy any relationship we have.
So, nudging and tapping without nagging...but fair and consistent...and only when needed by her and not wanted by me.
Gotcha!
PS...I can safely say the only training she had was at the Humane Society and that was "the refrigerator holds yummies". Everything else, nada. I am starting absolutely from scratch.
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

How about a long line so she can have a little bit of that.

Okay, so I go back to walking her with a long line (I don't have a problem with that) and then walk a little and let her wander Indiana a little (a "walk" command and a "find" command?) and maybe she will get it?
I have been trying to train for a heel on a dog that isn't going to compete. Okay, in fact, that is unfair to her. So, Steve, yes, I will go back to a long line in the country and put her 6 ft leash on her when we wander the city (no pressure from strangers or dogs where we go), but keep the long line with us for those moments she can sniff.

It's not that heeling is unfair, you can teach it to her. But I think a release from it is helpful to teaching it. It helps make heeling less stressful if that makes sense.

Actually it does, and now thinking about it, she is like having a puppy...she may be "mature" but she doesn't know anything. Well, sit, she likes that because she does it so pretty!
That's what I mean by unfair. I have been treating her as an "adult" dog when in fact, she is a "puppy" in every sense but age.
And, yes, I do understand how it would make heeling less stressful. Thanks, Steve.

In regards to a "release".
I think all commands should have a start and an end - the end being the release.
So, "let's go" (for a nice walk)....walking....walking...ok I think I want to let him pee.."OK".. released...dog does his business..."Let's go".....
At least that is how it works for me.

One small point probably not important with Lucy. I'd use free instead of ok. I've said OK at the wrong time and had Andy pee on someone.

Steve - GREAT point - ok (NO don't pee, I meant...) I have to change to FREE now - makes a LOT of sense espeically if you dog is "behaving" and you are talking and out slips "OK". Dog - is free then. Yes, better to say FREE.
Perfect! Thanks Steve.
