Wow. Blatant ignorance posted right out there online for all to see.
Not just online. National Geographic.
Yeah, I gotta say, the NG channel has yet to show me the same kind of total sophistication and discretion I'm used to seeing in their magazine.
That clip was frightening. The man who's dog was hauling him across the lawn on his @$$ actually looked frightened to me - not that his dog would ever attack HIM, but some subconscious recognition of the fact that if his furry 4-legged weapon ever ACTUALLY lit into an innocent bystander, he'd be powerless to stop it. Maybe if he would stop feeding his great beast ice cream he might at least close the weight gap between them... Ugh is right. The whole thing is just too scary for words.
I don't know who's more unstable,
The dog totally lost outside of it's environment or the breeders and owners of these single purpose livestock guardians.
I'm surprised Ed hasn't deleted this thread completely.

Maybe if we were extolling the virtues of breeding and owning dogs like this he would be quick to do so. Perhaps the thread has been spared because we're more or less venting our well-placed horror?

Granted, I love big, bad ass, good looking dogs... But, I think it's safe to say that I'd never, for any reason get a dog from someone who claims is "like a loaded .45". No thank you.
My hubby got me the Encyclopedia of the Dog and it says: "When the Berlin Wall came down, the 7,000 band of patrol dogs was disbanded. They were used as border patrol dogs. Careful breeding in Germany safeguards the futureof this cautious and independent dog. It is likely that as its popularity increases, breeders will selectively breed for a more amenable personality."
Also, they are not good with kids, not good for city living, are not easily trained, not good with other dogs, are used for security purposes and are good in cold weather.
Just from that I wouldn't own one unless I was
(a. single
(b. famous and needed a security dog on my property
(c. into illegal things where I needed a dog that's like a loaded .45
(d. owned livestock
And ABOVE all: was a very experienced handler and knew everything in and out about the dog.
Alyssa, I think you're right about the people that breed these dogs-->they are as crazy as the wolf hybrid people.
