I had to train Rasta to stop and sit at every doorway, so he wouldn't try to go crashing through ahead of us. I did it basically like an extension of waiting at the front door to go out. I had him sit, wait for me to walk through, then come through when called. I can have the front door open and Rasta will put his feet right up to the sill but not go any further. He does the same thing at the bedroom door and only comes in when called. He slept right next to the bed, on my side, until we moved into this house a year and a half ago. We also just close the door when we leave to prevent any issues.
She is a Great Dane/Lab cross. This has been going on for about a year now. We have no other dogs so there is no competition like there would be if they were let in and she's not. I'm not sure how to teach the rope/noodle thing exactly.
She's pretty needy, I spend a lot of time with her playing and petting and most of the time just hanging out with her in the same room. She "asks" to be petted a lot, but I don't pet her when she asks me to, only when I initiate it. When she WAS allowed in my room I didn't just let her pick a spot to lie down, and she was never ever allowed on my bed. So it's not like she had free reign of my room either.
Angela, thank you! I didn't know that about dogs - "They don't get "sometimes" - it's either I am allowed in or I'm not." That helps a bunch.
