I believe I read somewhere on this site that Ed said not to dismiss FAIR dogs and to never breed a FAIR to a FAIR. But I think he said that he had a FAIR stud dog that produced EXCELLENT puppies.
Without knowing the history of the parents it's hard to tell, parents could have been dysplastic, or could have been Excellent. You could call the breeders back and see if they've wised up and done any testing since then...

You are coasting down hill if you do. In fact, unless a male is outstanding in every other way, I would not breed an OFA fair male. On the other side to this coin, I have had several bitches that were OFA fair that came from OFA Good parents. These bitches never gave me a bad hip. I had an OFA fair bitch that produced OFA excellent pups (go figure)."
Betty, I am sorry to hear your news. It is heart breaking when you have such hopes. I went through a similar thing last year. My female who even surprised the OFA experts at MSU was so flashy and just dynamite in the Schutzhund ring. She is such a good dog and her parents are good Schutzhund dogs. She was born without a left hip, no socket, deformed ball, etc. It tore me up, I was hoping on a SCH III and breeding, she was spayed the next week and I was a wreck for days. The thought now that my sweet girl will have pain and be on curtailed exercise is tough, she has the super drivy want to work all the time temperment and it kills me seeing her disappointment when I have to quit (or she pays for days). My heart goes out to you, it sucks big time.

I m sorry about the bad news, but I am not a big fan of OFA. I prefer to use penn hips than OFA. They actually tell you the percentile for both hip. Some dogs act fine with HD, but have no DJD. And some have good hip, but really bad DJD.
