jenn verrier Webboard User Reg: 04-28-2009 Posts: 129 Loc: Offline	hi all thanks and i know we are far from taking the reward out of the picture yet, but i thought that was the case later on. re: recall. my dog is strangely GREAT with recall! i have her down at my parents right now, we take her on the beach off leash (we make sure we don't see any other dogs around), and she walks with me, and won't get too far away, and will come right away when I call. I had her at my brothers yesterday and we were just hanging out in the back yard with her off leash, and same thing. it actually seems like she is more obedient off leash than on leash! lol .. although.. squirells.. not so good. i will check out the links you posted too connie. i haven't watched the video you mentioned there...

You will want to really reinforce that no-distraction recall with parties and petting and rewards, so that as you proof for distraction and venue, the recall habit is deeply ingrained and associated with all good stuff. Don't take a good recall for granted! SUCH a crucial command.

jenn verrier Webboard User Reg: 04-28-2009 Posts: 129 Loc: Offline	cool, will remember to show more enthusiasm with her during these recalls then! i am actually practicing right now in the house.. she obviously spies something out the window (no clue what), and will keep going back to it and making a little "ruff" sound every minute or so, so I am trying to do the recall with this distractiion. it's def a lot easier without distractions for sure!

jenn verrier Webboard User Reg: 04-28-2009 Posts: 129 Loc: Offline	just got back from a nice long (fast paced) walk with luanne, and she did SO well. i used "watch" the whole time, and she would stay close (loose leash) looking back every few seconds, and i would "yes" and treat about every 1/2 block or block. she got a little pully around the park, and when we went on a newish route through chinatown (lots of people, kids, distractions, etc) we only crossed paths with one dog (yep i know my way around!), and i timed it so we could hide behind a car, did some sits, watch, and even a down until the dog passed. luckily she didn't hear the dog, otherwise it might not have gone that smoothly. anyway, i'm happy and now she's laying in her bed

Marching along "in the zone" with releases to sniff and fool around when you say so, and only then ... makes for so much of a better-controlled walk (and better exercise). You are also instilling a habit ... the habit of walking by your side without looking for other dogs to react to. :-)
