Please, please DO NOT ALLOW THE KIDS TO CONTROL THE DOG, ESPECIALLY BY THE COLLAR. The dog is being overstimulated and you are putting your dog and your children in a bad situation.
I don't think it's fair to correct the dog when he is being put in that situation. If you want to have the children be involved with the care of the dog, have them prepare the food, pick up poop and throw a toy for the dog with you holding the long line.
You must be fair to the puppy and to your children. Both of them do not have the capability of interacting alone.

amazing--i had replied to elaine's post re allowing a child to take hold of this dog's collar while the grown-up had a leash on it--BAD idea--and it didn't post. well, bottom line is Roni and i agree on this (FWIW, lol).
NO ONE's reflexes are good enough to prevent disaster in that situation. don't EVEN go there. JMHO.
