I am going to try this tethering subject again...maybe for the first time. I realize the beginning of this post was more about house training.
This may not be "true tethering" either, but here goes. I understand tethering to be where she is attached to me with a short 6 ft leash. She goes where I go or plops down with a toy where I am. We are not there yet - still doing more crate than anything else.
But when I do need to take her out of her crate to go outside on a leash or to be with me for very BRIEF periods, she is very easily distracted - nose constantly to the ground looking for things to explore, very typical puppy, I know. How do I get her to follow me?
She wants to pull me in the direction she wants to go OR gets this burst of energy and bolts to the water bowl or to the door. I've tried using my voice (hard not to use "come on") and treats. Depending on her hunger/motivation it may or may not work.
I know I'm relying more on pulling her and I've read how unproductive that is in the long run, but not sure how to get her to follow me. I feel like I'm using lots of treats for lots of things. Even though they are TINY, TINY pieces, it wouldn't take long to overfeed a puppy.
And a lot of the time, I end up just picking her up, because it's easier. She is 10 weeks and only 10 days with us. Just more patience...and treats?
next time the truck or any thing that makes her unsure comes around, take out a really high value reward and start doing some obedience with her to takae her focus off of the objects, most important make it fun and exciting..
