I've worked some BRT's in the past, they need a lot of socialization to overcome their protective nature, so take your girl with you *everywhere* and let her have a ton of positive interactions with people and environments.
don't know how i missed this thread, BRT's are my absolute favorite breed! i am determined to work them(once i am in a place to do that). must have pictures(or a link to pictures, lol)
I was not familiar with the breed but of course had to yahoo it after your post - what a beautiful animal! Is this your first BRT?
Hi Barb, yes, Dory is my first BRT. I have had dogs all my life from Welsh Corgi's to Danes and Irish Wolfhounds to rescue dogs from the shelter. Dory, my BRT puppy is the smartest dog with natural drive and a keen sensability. I am having so much fun with her!

You'll be glad that you did as she gets older.
Hi Will.
Exactly! I do take her everywhere and let her meet all kinds of people and go different places. As soon as she has her rabies vaccination we will visit the local dog park as well.

Hi Mallory,
I love the BRT breed as well! I didn't even know they were a breed until about 3 months ago I started to research different breeds before I decided upon what breed of puppy to get after my 15 year old Corgo died.
I stumbled upon the breed looking at the AKC website, then googled the breed and suddenly was drawn to the idea of getting a Black Russian Terrier. The breeder I chose, Russian Bear Kennels, really knows thier stuff and works diligently to breed beautiful dogs with sound temperments. My puppy was picked for me based on my environment and needs (I am disabled) and let me tell you, my girl, Dory, is perfect for me and me for her.
Once I figure out how to post pictures here I will.
This is all just my two cents and I am in no way an experienced handler/trainer.
Many of us prefer to socialize our animals in situations where we can better control the stresses we put on our pups. And many of us think teaching basic manners and obedience at home without distraction and in positive ways will predict a better outcome.
Personally, I take my dog every where I go. My goal is for her to be 'neutral' to everyone but me. I don't want her to be the pup that runs to everyone.

I see a theme here on the Leerburg forum. Many people tend to make assumptions based on very little information.
Let me just say this,
I am not ignorant. I don't make generalizations. I research and do my homework. Different breeds can respond to different training methods. Not all puppy obedience classes are bad. Not all are good. I know my puppy and can make sound decisions to her needs and what does or does not work for her. I do work with her each day at home. I understand that what works for some of you is great, although it might not be what is best for my puppy. I appreciate and respect those differences.
