" I guess what I'm saying is this: if the dog has the genes to get over what he hasn't seen, there is hope, even if you didn't do things quite right early on. Otherwise, you can expose and expose and expose, and get him to where he appears confident, but in a PSD situation, one day something will be thrown at him he won't be comfortable with and he just might fall back on his genetic uncertainty. "
Jenni brings up a good point . I still suggest you slow down and expose him to things and make him more confident in the areas he's already having problems with . Be careful though , even if you build his confidence in these areas but other things continuely pop up that you later correct , that's not the kind of dog you want either . It's great he overcomes these issues but you don't need a dog that has an environmental issue on the street that you have to work on later .
I've seen too many handlers who have overcome lots of problems with their dogs and because of it think they have the proper dog . Just because it overcomes some environmental issues isn't any good if a new issue always pops up that needs fixing . Don't fall into that trap . It's just a dog the needs constant do overs to get it right . As you know there are no do overs on the street .
Hopefully this dog will outgrow his environmental issues when he matures . But if he doesn't , know when to fish or cut bait .
Your talking about a dog that you want to do Poice Service work with here! Get a new dog with good solid nerves, who has NO environmental issues. If you get a pup, then take that pup out everywhere you go, don't wait until he's 11 months old.
