Heh yes whistles can be a bit intense. I will say that I've been given some very wierd looks training with the squeaker for heeling in public as I keep it in my mouth and squeek it with my teeth so that I can hold the clicker in one hand and be able to grab the reward quickly with the other.
It is difficult to talk and boy do people stare with I start to squeek like a stuffed squirrel...
I have one more question.
Is there any advantage of introducing a puppy to many different animals such as cats and guinea pigs? It will be good for puppy socialization or avoiding developing a chasing habit.
If introducing puppy to many different animals is a good idea, I would like to know how to do this (what age and how to do).
Connie, the neighbors my think that the cops are raiding you house when the whistle sounds! :-) Have to ask though, would the dog hear it well enough, or maybe he will & you won't if you are thinking of a 'dog' whistle not a regular one. At least the neighbors would not hear a 'dog' whistle.

I don't know for sure what range he can still hear. I was thinking about getting an assortment of those squeakers to try. Leo still hears me if I call him at almost the top of my voice loudness, but I'd rather not have to do that and drive neighbors crazy.
I wasn't even sure it was real deafness until I yelled "treats!" and everyone came but Leo, who did come tearing in when I yelled it twice as loud. Then I found that I could also speak to him when his back was to me, even from four feet away, and he didn't hear.
He's relatively young (maybe between 5 and 7 years old).

Connie,
Think the vibrating pager function on an e collar would be of use to you? You could train him to look at you with the vibration, and then you could give him his command with sign. And you wouldn't have to be worried about him hearing you. He'd feel you and turn to look.
A little off the wall perhaps but maybe worth a try.
