I need to dig up some of the threads I've posted re: training the recall.
ALWAYS worth reviewing.
I spend a ton of time on the recall with every dog I get. I do it every day and in every venue and under every (gradually increasing) distraction I can think of. I start it very carefully, never ever calling for anything negative and never calling if I can't reinforce it in case the dog doesn't comply.
I start in the house and it stays in the house for quite some time, from one room to another, upstairs, etc., at all times of day, before it even goes on the road as far as the back yard.
Foundation work on the recall is fun, it's simple, and does it ever pay off. *
We had a much scarier incident many months ago with what we suspect is a coyote. I wasn't sure how proofed her recall was, so I used her crate command instead. Worked like a charm.
Last week I trained her to "drink water" on command.
Of course, if you didn't go to Basic Training in the period of time I did, you can't imagine the way I give the command, but it gets lots of laughs from my Army buddies. (And it gives me peace of mind... sometimes I have to stop and realize, 'oh yeah, I don't train just for fun... their are practical reasons behind this stuff, too.')
