You've probably thought of this BUT... are you absolutely SURE there's no physical problem? She's not ill or not feeling well or has a blockage or something?
Sounds like you are being creative in getting her to eat with pretty good success, considering.
Have you tried the tripe?
I've also read that dogs can sometimes be coaxed to eat something like ground turkey or beef that has been very lightly cooked to enhance the smell. Maybe you could even cook a piece of bacon and then use the same pan to lightly cook the meat for her.
Are we seriously using the word "coaxing" in regards to "yummy cooked people-food" with an otherwise healthy dog? The animal with a wide mucousy throat capable of slurping down multiple pounds of flesh, bone and hide?
Medical conditions notwithstanding, run her ass every day next to a bike til she's dragging her tongue home and don't even offer food for the next two.
Then we'll see who's serious about starving herself!
Alyssa, I know life is crazy right now, but how about if I have some tripe, rabbit and maybe some other yummy super duper treat shipped to you? Do you think something like this will perk Danke up?
She's eating a pound or so of food, every couple of days.
She is staying hydrated.
Still hydrated?
She isn't a big eater anyway, right? Is she getting enough to maintain fitness and weight?
If she is maintaining fitness and weight, my gut tells me to try to keep everything as normal as possible. Emphasis on possible.
Go through your normal, or new normal, daily routine. Give food when it is meal time, and keep a watchful eye on her health.
Because this isn't a food thing. It isn't a "taste" thing.
I think it is a pack thing. And while the human grieving process is usually longer, a dog's naturally isn't.
I don't know how to tell you to do it, because I don't think I could, but I think this is going to resolve when she sees the pack get back up and start the journey again.
Hope that makes sense and doesn't sound insensitive......or corny. I'm trying to think more of the canine part of this situation than the human.
