Forgot to say that I order from Leerburg. I meant the THK does have retailers in the real world and that would be soooo great to go to a store and buy. Leerburg is efficient, quick, and you can get it next day if needed.
My dogs (I have four) also had problems with Canidae food. Honest Kitchen is an excellent food. I switched mine onto Innova and later Orijen (both available in Canada and Orijen is made in BC).
My dog suffered for many months before a diagnosis of EPI was finally made after I requested the test. My GSD, Oscar, had chronic diahrea for many many months. Changing to a rice/boiled chicken meal mixture minimized the severity of the diahrea, but it never truly went away, as I'm sure you're experiencing now. Once I would try to switch him back to dry kibble (high quality, Solid Gold type foods), the soft, smelly, slimy stools would return. Knowing what I know now, if you and your doctor have had no luck in treating your dogs diahrea, get the EPI test.
My dog was diagnosed too late and eventually passed away last Summer. After being on enzyme supplements only 2 weeks, he took a rapid turn for the worse one morning. He was rushed to the ER where surgery was performed. His intestines had become so elastic from the constant loose stools, that they somehow managed to tie themseleves into a knot, lost circulation and died. I had no choice but to put him down.
I know take any diahrea very seriously and any prolonged diahrea would be a red flag for me. Don't risk it. If your doctor suggests the test, do it. I only wish I had a doctor who knew about EPI. Maybe my Oscar would still be here.
All very good advice. I also fed canidea and my dog had diarrhea. I switched to orijen cold turkey and had immediate improvement. I do not advise switching like that for everyone, I was at the end if my bag of food and knew I did not want him on Canidea anymore, so I made a switch.
I do not like Canidae dog food. When they changed their formula, many dogs got sick from it, you can see those reviews online. I wonder if it would subside with a food change? Maybe to a hypoallergenic food?
I use Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes & Probiotics powder.
My wife tried to get some Honest Kitchen food from the local dog food place. He said that he could have it by Thursday. He contacted his supplier and was told that HK is moving to a new facility. There is different testing for US and Canadian food and they may not be able to ship to HK food to Canada until after this testing gets done and they don't know when it will be finished.
He has a couple boxes of HK food that we can get, but when they run out he can't guarantee that they will be able to get more until they are into the new facility and all testing is done.
He suggested N-R-G which is a European version. It is the same price as HK and he can guarantee to get lots of it.
Kevin, can your distributor get frozen raw food? It comes in patties that look like hamburger patties. I think Nature's Variety makes it, and I can get it at stores here in Ontario. It is complete with ground bone and some veggies and herbs, and it comes in a variety of protein sources (beef, chicken, rabbit, lamb, etc)
